EAST LANSING , Mich. - Michigan State indoor track and field returns to a familiar site, competing in the SPIRE B1G Invitational at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, Feb. 12-13.
"It's very exciting to have a larger portion of the team compete this weekend. Everyone has a high work-ethic, but we are fragmented for safety reasons so to come together on competition day is especially significant," Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa (Senakiewich) Breznau said.Â
On Friday, track events will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the women's 600m. The field events will commence at 10 a.m. with the women's long jump. The first day of events will end with the men's distance medley relay and the men's high jump, both at 2:30 p.m.
The SPIRE Institute is a familiar track for the Spartan, as the Big Ten Indoor Championship was held there last season.
"Competing at a familiar venue is helpful to not only our staff, but also our team. Having upperclassmen around who know the idiosyncrasies in any aspect is helpful, and I know they will help our underclassmen succeed," Breznau said.
On the women's side, junior Jenna Magness has the best time in the Big Ten in the 3,000m with a time of 9:20.65 at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational on Jan. 16. Teammates India Johnson and Katie Osika stand 15th and 19th, respectively in the Big Ten.
In the pole vault, junior Sophia Franklin has cleared the third highest mark in the Big Ten so far this season with a vault of 4.06m at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational. Junior Calli Ostapowicz is tied for 14th with a vault of 3.77m at the Gladstein Invitational on Jan. 23.
Sophomore Olivia Lopez has had a strong indoor season. She currently holds the No. 13 spot in the Big Ten in the long hump in the league with a hump of 5.76m. In the weight throw, junior Rebecca Mammel is tops in the league with a personal best heave of 22.29m at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational.
On the men's side, junior Trevor Stephenson has the fourth-high pole vault in the league, clearing 5.10m at the Gladstein Invitational. Senior Jerimiah Evans stands 10th in the shot put with a season-best throw of 17.67m at the Hoosier Hills Invitational.
Sophomore James Uhlenberg has the fifth-best time in the B1G in the 3,000m with a time of 8:02.58 at the Gladstein Invitational, while freshman Brendan Favazza is eighth with a time of 8:07.66 at the same meet. MSU has four of the top 20 times in the conference in the 3,000m.
"I would like to see our student-athletes continue to support one another as well as focus on our team energy and what we can control. I would also like to see them have fun and engage in the spirit of competition and that means being at their best on that day," Breznau added.
Following the B1G SPIRE Invitational, the Spartans return to Michigan for the Silverston Invitational in Ann Arbor on Feb. 19.Â
