Wrestling Continues November Slate at Navy Classic

EAST LANSING, Mich. – After taking a week off following the Michigan State Open, the Spartan wrestling team will pick its season back up at the Navy Classic on Saturday.

Heading to Annapolis, Maryland for the event, MSU will begin action at 10 a.m. in the Naval Academy's Wesley Brown Field House.

Competition Lined Up
The Green and White are one of 12 schools that the Midshipmen will host this weekend, with fellow Big Ten member Rutgers also attending the Navy Classic. MSU is also set to get a look at upcoming non-conference opponents Lock Haven and Bucknell, as the Spartans travel to Pennsylvania for duals with both those programs on Dec. 2 and 3. Other teams wrestling in Annapolis are American, Bloomsburg, The Citadel, Cleveland State, Edinboro, Kent State, Ohio and VMI.

Last Time Out
Sophomores Chase Saldate and Caleb Fish both came out with season-opening titles at the MSU Open on Nov. 6, as Saldate picked up four decisions via pin in five matches to take the 157 open division crown, and Fish complimented that with five winning decisions to grab first in the freshman/sophomore division at the 165 weight class. Redshirt senior Rayvon Foley barely missed out on his own title in his first event at the 133-weight class, losing to Oklahoma's Tony Madrigal by a 4-3 decision in the open division finals, while freshman Luke Daly finished runner-up in the 174 freshman/sophomore division bracket.

Spartans at the 2019 Navy Classic
In the 2019 edition of the event, then-redshirt junior Jake Tucker won the 157 weight class to help Michigan State take home third place, scoring a technical fall and two major decisions along the way. Then-redshirt sophomore Cameron Caffey (184) and redshirt freshman Layne Malczewski (174) both finished third in their classes as well, as Caffey went 3-1 on the day and Malczewski got two decisions via fall en route to a 4-1 record at the Navy Classic.

Omania Coming Off Team USA Appearance
Redshirt sophomore Peyton Omania had the most noteworthy preseason on any Spartan, winning the the 67-kg Greco-Roman title at the USA Team Senior World Trials in September and then going on to represent Team USA at the World Wrestling Championships in early October. Omania will make his season debut at the Navy Classic this weekend in the 149 weight class.

NCAA Qualifiers Eyeing Detroit
The Spartans have seven returning qualifiers from last season's NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Missouri, and all of them are looking to get back there this year with the 2022 NCAA Championships being held down the road from MSU in Detroit, Michigan. Caffey, Foley, Malczewski, Omania, Saldate, Tucker and redshirt sophomore Jordan Hamdan are all back in the Green and White, with five of them already beginning their seasons at the MSU Open.

Following a week break for Thanksgiving, Michigan State heads to its first duals of the campaign on Dec. 2 at Lock Haven and Dec. 3 at Bucknell. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
