MINNEAPOLIS – Michigan State wrestling was defeated in its final Big Ten dual of the season on Sunday, falling to No. 9-ranked Minnesota, 37-6, at Maturi Pavilion.
MSU moves to 4-9 overall and 1-7 in Big Ten duals ahead of its final regular season dual against intrastate rival Central Michigan on Friday, February 20 at 7:00 p.m. from Jenison Field House.
Redshirt sophomore 133-pounder Caleb Weiand got back into the win column with a 4-2 decision over Minnesota's Blake Beissel. Weiand tallied a first period takedown and maintained that advantage for the remainder of the bout.
Minnesota picked up four straight bonus point victories at 141, 149, 157 and 165 pounds which included three consecutive wins by fall to take a 26-3 lead in the team score.
Graduate 174-pounder Connor O'Neill earned an early first period takedown but dropped a hard-fought 7-6 decision to No. 24-ranked Ethan Riddle.
Nine minutes wasn't enough in the 197-pound bout as No. 23-ranked redshirt junior Kael Wisler went to tiebreakers with No. 25-ranked Gavin Nelson. Wisler rode for 13 seconds in the first tiebreaker and escaped in just seven seconds in the second tiebreaker to hold the riding time advantage. That didn't end up mattering however as Wisler earned a takedown in the final seconds of the tiebreaker period to win by decision, 5-2.
Minnesota took the heavyweight bout by decision to win the dual, 37-6.
