2/28/2020 7:18:00 PM | Softball
Riverside, Calif. -- Michigan State took an early lead in the opening game of the UC-Riverside Amy S. Harrison Tournament against Nebraska-Omaha, but the Mavericks scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to break a 2-2 deadlock and earn a 4-2 victory.
The Spartans (3-11) put two runs on the board in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Joanna Bartz and a ground ball by Erica Holt that scored Mackenzie Meech. In both the second and fourth innings, the Spartans got consecutive base hits from Courtney Callahan and Shae Schreckengost, but the big hit never came for the Spartans.
After leaving the bases loaded in the second inning, Nebraska-Omaha (9-7) scored twice in the bottom of the third inning on a pair of base hits and a Spartan error, then took the lead with a pair of two-out extra-base hits in the bottom of the fifth after leading off the frame with a hit batter and getting a runner into scoring position due to anther MSU miscue.
Alli Walker started the game and went 2.2 innings, scattering six hits. Sarah Ladd came on in relief and allowed just three base hits and struck out three, but also surrendered the double and triple in the fifth that allowed the go-ahead runs to score. UNO starter Ryanne Millington lasted just one inning and surrendered both MSU runs, with Kamryn Meyer coming out of the bullpen in relief with two on and none out in the second inning and shutting down the MSU offense the rest of the way.
Callahan tied her career best with three base hits on the day, while Schreckengost was 2-for-3. Both Janae Cameron and Sydney Ross had two base hits for UNO.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday at 12 pm ET/9 am PT, but MSU will take on Montana in a single contest on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm ET (11:30 PT)
