Walker Shines In Complete-Game Shutout of FGCU
2/22/2020 11:50:00 PM | Softball
Estero, FL -- Michigan State split its second straight day of action, earning a 5-0 shutout victory over FGCU in the nightcap of the Saturday schedule. The Spartans got an impressive complete-game performance from pitcher Alli Walker, who surrendered just three base hits and struck out five.
MSU dropped a frustrating 2-1 decision to Southern Illinois in the first game of the day but put four runs on the scoreboard in the second inning to take a lead it would not relinquish in the second contest. Walker did not allow a base hit until the fifth inning while earning her first win and first complete game of the season.
MSU (3-9) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second, thanks in part to three walks issued in the frame. Katie Quinlan had an RBI single that plated a pair of runs, and the Eagle pitchers also walked in a pair of runs to aid the Spartan cause. The visitors extended their lead out to 5-0 with a solo homer by Camryn Wincher in the top of the third inning, smacking her first career round-tripper over the wall in left field.
The home team tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, with a pair of base hits sandwiched around two fielder's choice plays, but Walker closed out the Eagles.
FGCU used three pitchers in the game, combining for seven walks and three strikeouts; MSU outhit its hosts 8-4.
Joanna Bartz led MSU both offensively and defensively; she was 2-of-3 with a walk at the plate and recorded two putouts and five assists at third base. Left fielder Courtney Callahan had a pair of impressive catches and finished with four putouts while going 1-for-3 with a walk.
The Spartans will take on Fordham to wrap up the FGCU Invitational on Sunday at 11:15 pm.

" We are learning and improving every time out, and those are the important things to remember. You look at a player like Alli Walker, who is so, so much improved from last year – and that's all because she put in a lot of hard work. Its awesome to see her rewarded. Courtney Callahan and Joanna Bartz are so steady for us defensively but tonight really stood out for what they bring to the table for us. A young player like Cam Wincher getting her first home run, and our freshman pitcher Sarah Ladd who keeps giving us everything she has in the circle even when we're not producing offensively. We're excited about the future for this group of players, and because our players are willing to put in the work we need them to, we're just excited when they get rewarded. Tomorrow is back to work to improve on what we did today, but we're pretty pleased with how we rebounded from a tough loss to attack the second game of the day."
