Spartans Drop 2-1 Game to Open FGCU Invitational
2/21/2020 11:54:00 AM | Softball
Fort Myers, Fla. -- Michigan State suffered a 2-1 loss to UMass-Lowell on Friday to open the FGCU Spring Break Invitational in Fort Myers, Florida.
The game moved at a fast pace, as both pitchers limited baserunners, surrendering just five base hits each. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single by Cam Wincher, but saw the River Hawks put together a one-out rally with a walk and a pair of base knocks that loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth. A single by leadoff hitter Courtney Cashman scored two to give UML a 2-1 lead.
Sarah Ladd recorded her third straight complete game, tossing 6.0 innings and striking out a career-best seven, scattering five base hits, three of which came in that fifth-run rally. Lovina Capria was equally impressive for the River Hawks, going the full seven innings and striking out five, allowing five hits.
Joanna Bartz had two base hits for MSU (1-8), and was robbed of a third by an impressive diving catch by Tori Mueller in left field. Katie Quinlan had a triple, and Wincher had the RBI single for the Spartans. UML scattered its five base hits among five players, with Cashman getting the RBI single in the fifth.
The Spartans complete the Friday doubleheader with a game against Harvard at 12:15 pm.
