Women's Soccer Closes Out Non-Conference Play at Oakland Sunday

Michigan State will hit the road on Sunday for an in-state matchup at Oakland.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's soccer closes out the non-conference portion of the 2019 season with a road matchup at Oakland on Sunday, Sept. 15. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m. at Oakland Soccer Field in Rochester, Michigan.Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Spartans defeated Bowling Green, 3-2, in overtime on Thursday night at DeMartin Stadium. The Spartans improved to 6-1-0 on the season with the win and remain undefeated at home with a 5-0-0 mark.

Michigan State is 2-0-0 in overtime games this season, with the first overtime win coming at Boston University on Sept. 1.
Sophomore forward Gia Wahlberg, who went into the game tied for sixth in the NCAA in total goals, scored her fourth game winning goal of the season and second overtime goal, two minutes into overtime to seal the win for Michigan State.
With her eighth goal of the season, Wahlberg has scored the most goals by a Spartan in a single-season since Jamie Cheslik also scored eight goals during the 2014 season.
Freshman forward Paige Webber scored the game-tying goal in the 80th minute to even the score at 2-2 and force the team's second overtime game of the season. This was Webber's second career goal and second game-tying goal, as the freshman also scored the game-tying goal at Boston University on Sept. 1, which resulted in a 2-1 victory for the Spartans.
MICHIGAN STATE NOTES
The Spartans have had seven different goal scorers through the first seven matches, with Camryn Evans, Danielle Stephan, Bella Jodzis, Michaela Kovacs, Sydney Kloosterman, Gia Wahlberg and Paige Webber all tallying goals on the score-sheet. The seven goal scorers tops last season's numbers, with there only being six goal scorers through all 18 games in 2018.

This is the team's best start at home, with a 5-0-0 record, since the 2009 season when the team began with a 6-0-0 mark at DeMartin Stadium.
With the team's two goals versus Bowling Green, the Spartan goal total through seven games hit 18 goals, which tops the team's total goals in 2018. Last season, the Spartans scored 16 goals through all 18 games.

MSU leads opponents in shots on goal (54-32), shots per game (14.6-10), corners (36-23) and total goals (18-8) through seven games.
SPARTANS AMONG THE NATION'S BEST
Wahlberg and Stephan are both ranked nationally in various NCAA Division I Women's Soccer categories in total goals and total assists, respectively.

With her eight goals this season, Wahlberg is tied for fifth nationally in total goals scored. She is also tied for first nationally with four game winning goals, two of which were in overtime.

Stephan has a team-high five assists in the first six games, which is tied for ninth in the NCAA. Stephan led the Spartans in assists for the past two seasons, tallying six in 2017 and four last season.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Michigan State has a 13-2-3 series advantage over Oakland. Last season, the Spartans shutout the Golden Grizzlies, 2-0, on Sept. 6 at DeMartin Stadium. The Spartans remain unbeaten vs. Oakland since 2001.

The Golden Grizzlies also begin their season with a 2-2-1 record, notching wins versus Valparaiso, 1-0, and a home overtime win over Eastern Kentucky. 2-1. Oakland is coming off a 3-1 loss at Western Michigan on Sept. 12, marking their third consecutive defeat.
Sophomore midfielders Alexa Sabbagh and Sami Lopez lead the Golden Grizzlies with three goals and one assist each through five games, for 14 of the team's 26 points.

I think to the point about Bowling Green's quality; it's a good test for us as we're winding down non-league play. When I looked at the non-league schedule, I had Bowling Green up there with Butler and Boston University, and I think that proved to be true. We've been fortunate enough to come away with two of those, so that's good for us. Now we've got to get the job done on Sunday at Oakland and get ready for Big Ten play."
