Spartan Wrestling Hits Road To Big Ten Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State's wrestling team will travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota for the 2019 Big Ten Wrestling Championships on Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10 at Williams Arena ("The Barn") on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The event gets underway at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday, with the preliminary, quarterfinal, semifinal and wrestleback matches taking place in Sessions I and II. Consolation semifinals and seventh-place matches get underway at noon on Sunday, while first-, third- and fifth-place matches begin at 3 p.m. BTN Plus will provide live streaming coverage of Sessions I, II and III, while the championship rounds will be carried live on BTN.

MSU TURNS IN BEST DUAL SEASON OF CHANDLER ERA
With a 10-8 overall record and a 3-6 mark in Big Ten duals, the Michigan State wrestling program is on the right track under third-year head coach Roger Chandler. This is the first time since the 2002-03 season that the Spartans finished the regular season with a dual record above .500 and the first time since 2010-11 that MSU earned three or more wins in conference duals. The 10 dual wins are tied for the most in program-history over the last 20 years, matching 10-win seasons in 2000-01 and 2002-03 under Tom Minkel.
HUGHES AND FOLEY AMONG NCAA DIVISION I LEADERS
Redshirt sophomore Drew Hughes and sophomore Rayvon Foley are among the best in the business in Division I at earning bonus points for their team. Hughes ranks No. 9 in Divison I with 11 wins by fall over DI opponents in 29:46. Foley is No. 5 in technical falls with nine in 48:37. Hughes is the second ranked 174-pounder in falls behind Daniel Lewis of Missouri and Foley is the second ranked 125-pounder in tech falls behind Nick Piccinnini of Oklahoma State. There is a 17-match minimum in division to be ranked on the NCAA leaderboard.
EIGHT SPARTANS PRE-SEEDED INTO BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Big Ten Conference announced the preliminary seeds for the 2019 Big Ten Wrestling Championships on Monday, March 4 and featured eight seeded Spartans. Monday's pre-seeds were voted on by coaches and ranked the top eight wrestlers in three weight classes and all 14 starters in seven weight classes based on how many NCAA Championships qualifier allocations the conference received. Seventy-eight automatic bids to the
Rayvon Foley is the Spartans' top-seeded wrestler heading into Friday's coaches meetings and is seeded No. 4 at 125 pounds. Drew Hughes is currently No. 8 at 174 pounds and Brad Wilton is No. 8 at 197 pounds. Anthony Tutolo (No. 9 at 133) and Cameron Caffey (No. 10 at 184) round out the Spartans currently seeded in the top 10.

Rayvon Foley (No. 8 at 125), Anthony Tutolo (No. 24 at 133), Jake Tucker (No. 28 at 157), Drew Hughes (No. 33 at 184), Cameron Caffey (No. 24 at 184), and Chase Beard (No. 27 at 285) were all ranked in the latest NCAA RPI released on March 1. The RPI rankings are instrumental in determining how many qualifier allocations each conference receives. RPI is also one of the determining factors for at-large selections into the NCAA Championships following the conclusion of the Big Ten Championships. Forty-four at-large qualifiers will be seeded into the NCAA Championships.
MSU WRESTLING SIGNEE HAMDAN WINS HIS FOURTH MHSAA STATE TITLE
Fall of 2019 signee Jordan Hamdan completed something no other Hudson High School (Hudson, Michigan) wrestler had ever done last weekend winning his fourth high school state championship. Hamdan became the 25th wrestler in MHSAA history to complete the feat and concludes his high school career with a 208-8 record which featured a 52-0 mark during his junior and senior seasons. Also joining Hamdan in the recruiting class of 2019 is Jordan Crace of Bellefontaine High School in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Crace is currently the No. 8-ranked high school recruit at his weight class and will compete in the OHSAA state tournament starting on March 7.
