Spartan Men’s Soccer Stopped by Penn State Tuesday
10/1/2019 9:41:00 PM | Men's Soccer
The Nittany Lions capitalize on opportunities.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer was shut down by Penn State, 3-0, Tuesday night at DeMartin Stadium.
"The biggest difference from the last game was I thought we were all tied in together as a group. Obviously, a couple things went our way on Friday night, they didn't tonight. I thought it was disappointing to give up that goal on a throw-in. I thought our response in the second half was very good for the first 10-12 minutes. Unfortunate to not get a tying goal there and that's probably what we needed, and it didn't happen. Credit Penn State, they were sharp tonight. They were focused; they moved the ball well," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said.
The Spartans are now 1-5-2 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten action. The Nittany Lions improve to 5-1-2 and 2-0-1 in league action.
The Nittany Lions controlled the pace of the game for much of the first half, but early on the game remained tight. Penn State took the 1-0 lead in the 28th minutes off the second goal of the season by Liam Butts. Pierre Reedy got the ball to Butts who found the back of the net from close range.
The score remained 1-0 after the first 45 minutes with PSU out-shooting the MSU 4-2.
In the second half, both teams picked up the pace offensively. The Spartans had some chances early in the period. Freshman defender Nick Stone fired a pair of shots in the 50th minute that were both blocked by the stellar Nittany Lion defense.
Despite the increased chances by the Spartans, Penn State increased its lead to 2-0 in the 68th minute. Andrew Privett scored his second goal of the season beating MSU redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Hunter Morse 1-on-1. The Nittany Lions added another goal in the 80th minute when Butts scored his second goal of the game.
"I think our mentality of just dialing in for 90-minutes. Doing some good things on both ends for 55-60 minutes isn't good enough when you play well coached teams and everybody in the Big Ten is well coached. Penn State was ready for the game. We just need to be more consistent for 90 minutes," Rensing said.
For the game, Penn State out-shot Michigan State, 14-9, while MSU had seven saves to PSU's two.
Michigan State will now hit the road, taking on Wisconsin on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
