Michigan State Soccer Travels to Wisconsin Sunday

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer hits the road to take Wisconsin on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m. (ET). The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network with Mike Monaco and Christopher Munroe on the call. The Spartans look to bounce back after a 3-0 loss to Penn State at home on Oct. 1.
Michigan State fell to 1-6-2 overall and 1-1-0 in Big Ten action after the loss to the Nittany Lions. Wisconsin is 2-7-1 overall this season and 0-1-1 in league play. The Badgers fell to Milwaukee in non-conference play, 1-0, on Oct. 2.

ROAD WARRIORS
After playing four home games and only two road games in September, the Spartans will see a big difference in October. Michigan State has only two games remaining in East Lansing this month against Maryland on Oct. 11 and Ohio State on Oct. 19. The Spartans have five road games in October, including three in Big Ten action. This season, MSU is 1-1 on the road with a win against No. 22 Rutgers (Sept. 27) and a 2-1 loss to Dartmouth (Sept. 14).

CLOSE CALLS

Five of the Spartans' six of defeats have been by one goal. The Spartans have lost three games 1-0, including two to ranked teams in No. 13 Washington and No. 20 Notre Dame.
THE FUTURE IS NOW
As Michigan State fights through some early-season injuries, several young Spartans have seen playing time. Through nine games, six true freshmen have played with Alaa Algahim, Conner George, Colton Stanley, Nick Stone and Gianni Ferri all getting starts. Overall, 15 underclassmen have played this season for MSU.
SCOUTING THE BADGERS
Wisconsin's two conference games came from strong opponents in No. 5 Indiana and defending national champions Maryland. On Sept. 20, the Badgers fell to the Hoosiers 3-1, with their lone goal coming from freshman Matthew Comiskey. On Sept. 27, both Maryland and Wisconsin fought hard in the matchup, but after two overtimes, the score was still 0-0 and ended in a tie.
Senior Dean Cowdroy is the Badgers starting goalkeeper. The Australian who transferred from Lander University in South Carolina last year, has been proving why he belongs in goal. He had a career-high nine saves against Maryland game and has a total of 43 for the season, which is second in the Big Ten behind MSU's Hunter Morse.
Robin Olofsson (1g, 0a) and Elan Koenig (0g, 2a) are leading the team in minutes played.
Wisconsin is leading the overall series 23-12-7, but this matchup always seems to be a close one. Most recently in 2018, the Badgers edged the Spartans 1-0 in an OT thriller. In 2016 and 2017, both games went to two overtimes that ended in draws.
STARTING CONFERENCE PLAY
MSU opened B1G play at Rutgers on Sept. 27. The Spartans are 6-0-1 in their last seven Big Ten openers. Michigan State was the last B1G team to start league play.
GETTING IN THE GAME
Due to several injuries, 20 of the 26 players currently on the roster have seen action through nine games this season. Only six Spartans have started every games in Michael Miller, Farai Mutatu, Jack Beck, Michael Pimlott, Nick Woodruff and Hunter Morse. Alex Shterenberg, Cody Sweatte, Nick Stone and Olu Ogunwale have played in all nine games.
AROUND THE BIG TEN
Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Hunter Morse is among the leaders in several categories in the Big Ten. He is first in the saves with 46, just ahead of Wisconsin's Dean Cowdroy, who has 43 saves. Morse is also fourth in the league in goals against average (1.16). Morse also is second in save percentage (.807).
Sophomore forward Farai Mutatu is second in the conference in shots with 29, averaging 3.22 shots per game.
WELCOME BACK
Redshirt-junior defender Patrick Nielsen made his first appearance of the 2019 season against Rutgers. Nielsen who has been battling injury played nine minutes at the end of the game against the Scarlet Knights.
GETTING ON THE SCOREBOARD
Redshirt-sophomore forward Alex Shterenberg scored his first career goal against Florida Gulf Coast on Sept. 2. Shterenberg scored the Spartans first goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 89th minute as the equalizer sending the game into overtime. He also added an assist against Cornell and leads MSU with one goal and one assist for three points.
NO RELATION
Despite the exact same spelling freshman midfielder Conner George is no relation on senior guard from the MSU men's basketball team (George's mother, Cathy, is also the MSU volleyball coach). George the freshman forward hails from Louisville, Kentucky.
TURNING PRO
Three former Michigan State men's soccer players were drafted on the first day of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft in Chicago on Jan. 11, 2019. Senior forward DeJuan Jones led the way as the 11th overall pick, drafted by the New England Revolution.
For the first time ever, the Spartans had two players drafted in the first round as fellow senior forward Ryan Sierakowski was drafted 23rd overall by the Portland Timbers. Senior goalkeeper Jimmy Hague was the sixth pick of the second round (30th overall), taken by FC Cincinnati. Hague will see a familiar face when he arrives in Cincinnati with former Spartan great Fatai Alashe on the roster.
In 2018, Ken Krolicki was the first Spartan drafted since defender Zach Carroll in 2016 when he was chosen as the 53rd overall pick, chosen as the seventh player in the third round. In 2014, three Spartans signed to play for MLS with Fatai Alashe being chosen fourth overall, the highest ever for MSU. Jay Chapman a signed a homegrown contract with Toronto FC, while Adam Montague was taken in the third round by the Vancouver Whitecaps.

This season, Michigan State will have three captains in seniors Giuseppe Barone, Michael Pimlott and redshirt-junior Patrick Nielsen.
MICHIGAN STATE REWIND
