Spartans Men’s Soccer Suffers First Loss of the Season to No. 19 Kansas City

Luke Spadafora netted his second goal of the season.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- No. 10/25 Michigan State men's soccer suffered its first setback of the season, 3-1, against No. 19 Kansas City, 3-1, Friday night at Durwood Soccer Stadium.
The Spartans fall to 4-1-1 this season, while Kansas City improves to 4-1-1.
"It was a game of two halves. UMKC is a good team and they came out strong, and we didn't deal with both sides of the ball the way we are capable of," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "I thought the response was very good we were very good in the second half. Unfortunate to not tie the game. We had plenty of chances in that half to tie the game at 2-2. We will learn from this road game and get better to start games. We had a good non-conference season going 4-1-1. All eyes on Northwestern and the Big Ten!"
The Roos wasted no time getting on the board in the ninth minute. Mariano Beunza's ball from Brevyn Cole gave Kansas City the early 1-0 lead.
In the 34th minute the Spartan offense started heating up. A shot by senior midfielder Colin Arce was blocked. It was followed up by a shot wide right by sophomore midfielder Peter Soudan.
In the 38th minute, Kansas City doubled its lead. Gabriele Galluccio took a pass from the right side once again by Cole.
The first half would end with the Roos still holding the 2-0 lead. Kansas City out-shot the Spartans, 9-4. Junior goalkeeper Jake Grekowicz made two saves in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Spartans came out as the aggressor. Michigan State had shots from senior midfielder Richie Ludwig and freshman Drew Rensing, before finding the back of the net.
Michigan State got on the board in the 56th minute. Junior forward Oscar Huerta, coming up the right side, found the head of sophomore midfielder Luke Spadafora. The goal was the second of the season for Spadafora, while Huerta added his second assist.
The Roos added an insurance goal in the 85th minute with a goal from Bryce Outman.
Kansas City had a slight edge in shots 16-13, Grekowicz had three saves compared to two by Roos' keeper Brandon Kincaid.
The Spartans return home to take on Northwestern on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
