MSU shut outs Green Bay to register sixth clean sheet of season; all three goals come in 10-minute scoring explosion.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- No. 8/12 Michigan State men's soccer had a three-goal explosion in a 10-minute span in the first half on the way to a 3-0 blanking of Green Bay Tuesday night at DeMartin Stadium in a non-conference contest.
With the win, MSU improves to 10-2-3 overall, while Green Bay slides to 4-8-4. Michigan State finishes non-conference action with a 6-1-1 mark. MSU reached double-digit in wins for the first time since 2018. Tuesday's meeting between MSU and GB was the first meeting since 2000, and the Spartans improved to 5-1-2 all-time against the Phoenix, including 4-0-1 at home.
The Spartans are also 2-0 vs. teams from the state of Wisconsin, with both wins coming by 3-0 clean sheet victories, beating the No. 13 Badgers of Wisconsin, 3-0, on Sept. 15, also at DeMartin. Tuesday's shutout was MSU's sixth clean sheet of the season, with five of the six coming at home, as the Spartans have defended DeMartin in dramatic fashion, remaining unbeaten at home in moving to 7-0-3 at DeMartin, outscoring the opposition, 23-6.
Junior forward Oscar Huerta played a role in all three goals, netting the first two and assisting on the third, to register his first career brace, while tallying a career-high seven points.
"I wasn't really pleased with how we started the game; I thought we were a little slow and sloppy on some things. We had a couple really good chances to score and just didn't hit that. The quality is there," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "To the guys' credit they found it mid-way through the first half and once they sensed it, they jumped on it and that was really good of the guys. Pleased to get a shutout, pleased to get three goals, pleased to get a lot of guys a lot of minutes. This was a tricky game for a Tuesday with a game on the way Friday. I am just really happy for Oscar, sometimes the minutes aren't there for him, but he just keeps working and doing the right things. He waited for his opportunity and two big goals for us that was huge, to get us to 10 wins for the first time since 2018."
Senior midfielder Leo Conneh and junior defender Brandon Munson assisted on both of Huerta's goals, first in the 25th minute, then in the 29th minute, while sophomore midfielder Luke Spadafora scored the third goal of the 10-minute scoring burst with a goal in the 35th minute, off the assist from Huerta.
With the two goals Tuesday, Huerta became the fourth different Spartan with a brace this season, including the second against a team from Wisconsin. Huerta joins Munson, who had a pair of goals in the season opener vs. UAlbany (Aug. 20); senior forward Andrew Darakdjian with two vs. Northwestern (Sept. 15); and senior forward Richie Ludwig with two vs. No. 13 Wisconsin (Sept. 15).
Huerta is also only the second Spartan to tally seven points in a match, matching Munson who had seven in the UAlbany match with an assist in the 6-2 Victory for MSU.
Michigan State's offense was in full force pressure from the get-go, and continued throughout the night, as the Spartans had a 21-6 shots advantage, including 18-1 in the first half, along with 7-1 in shots on goal. MSU also had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, with all six coming in the first half, while GB took its two in the second stanza.
A total of 22 players saw action Tuesday, the second-most this season behind 23 Spartans in action in the SIUE (Aug. 27) and Niagara (Aug. 30), including 19 of the 22 playing 10 minutes or more.
After applying continued pressure for the first 24 minutes, but were unrewarded, the Spartans broke the seal on the net in the 25th minute, when Munson and Conneh connected on a give-and-go down the left sideline, with Munson powering past Phoenix defenders and into the box, where he lofted a pass to the far post where a hustling Huerta tapped past GB goalkeeper Drew Swancutt and into the back of the net for a 1-0 Spartan lead.
Just barely four minutes later, Conneh and Munson again generated another scoring chance down the left side, with Conneh curving a cross from the top left corner of the box to the far post, where Huerta ran on to the pass and tapped it in. After initially calling offsides, the officials reviewed the goal and ruled Huerta was onside at the time of Conneh's pass and the goal was good for a 2-0 MSU advantage.
Just over six minutes later, it was Huerta's turn to tally a helper, leaving the ball off to Spadafora, who took a touch through a pair of Phoenix defenders, then chipped in a left-footed blast from the top of the box and into the upper left v of the net past a sprawling Swancutt.
"I know it was a game that wasn't Big Ten, and we were all overthinking, but as soon as we entered the field, we worked hard. I was ready to go; I got my opportunity, and the first one came, and thankfully the second one came," Huerta said.
From there on out, the Spartan defense battened down the hatches and snuffed out any offensive threats from the Phoenix, as MSU junior goalkeeper Jake Grekowicz made a save on lone shot on goal he faced all night to register his sixth solo clean sheet of the season.
Michigan State, currently tied for first in the Big Ten Conference standings, resumes B1G action for its home regular-season finale against Rutgers on Friday, Oct. 30 in a 7 p.m. contest.
The Spartans then travel to Bloomington, Indiana on Wednesday, Nov. 4 for a match-up with the No. 4/7 Hoosiers of Indiana, in a 7 p.m. match, with likely implications on the Big Ten regular-season title.
