LAKE FOREST, Illinois -- The Michigan State men's golf team finished as runners-up at the Windon Memorial Classic at the Knollwood Club in Lake Forest, Illinois. The Spartans shot a 7-over-par 295 in Monday's final round and finished 2-under-par 862 (281-286-295). Marquette overtook the Spartans with a 4-under-par 284 on Monday and finished 4-under-par 860 (291-285-284) for the tournament.
"We're still relatively young and I knew today would be a growing day no matter the result," MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said. "The par-5 scoring is going to be a focal point for us going forward; that's all we need to button up right now.
"It was a really good event with a lot of good teams, so to play spotty to well and still beat a lot of good teams is encouraging."
The Spartans had three players place in the top 12, including Donnie Trosper (71-69-74) and Andrew Walker (67-71-76) who tied for eighth place at 2-under-par 214. James Piot tied for 12th place at even-par 216 (73-70-73).
"The top four guys really separated themselves and our top three in this tournament were really steady," Lubahn said. "They put themselves in a good position and now we just have to find a fifth score and Zach did that for us today. We're still learning but I like this team."
Trosper shot a 2-over-par 74 on Monday and earned his second straight top-10 finish.
Andrew Walker was 5-over-par at the turn on Monday, but birdied two of the first four holes on the back and finished the day with a 4-over-par 76.
Piot was 1-over-par at the turn but parred seven of the next eight holes and ended his day with a birdie for a 1-over-par 73.
Troy Taylor II recorded his second eagle of the tournament on Monday with a 25-foot putt for on the par-4, 357-yard 13th hole. Taylor shot a 3-over-par 75 on Monday and tied for 39th place at 5-over-par 221 (70-76-75).
Zach Rosendale had his best round of the tournament with a 1-over-par 73 on Monday. He birdied the eighth hole and then parred nine of the final 10 holes. He was 15-over-par 231 (79-79-73) for the tournament.
Michigan State will be back in action at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate, Sept. 30 – Oct. 2, at the Erin Hills Golf Club in Erin, Wisconsin.
