Spartans in Ninth After Opening Round of the Mason Rudolph Championship

FRANKLIN, Tennessee -- The Michigan State women's golf team is tied for ninth place after the opening round of the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tennessee. In a highly competitive field that features seven teams that ended 2017-18 ranked in the Golfstat top 30, the Spartans shot a 6-over-par 294 on Friday at the Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course.
Host school Vanderbilt leads the tournament at 10-under-par 278, one shot ahead of second place Arizona State, as just four of the 15 teams in the field were under par on Friday.
Junior Paz Marfa Sans led the way for MSU with a 1-under-par 71 on Friday and is tied for 18th place. Marfa Sans birdied three of the first four holes and then recorded 11 consecutive pars before her only bogey of the day on the 16th hole.
Junior Allyson Geer-Park and sophomore Yurika Tanida are tied for 28th place after both shot even-par 72s. Geer-Park was 2-over-par on the front nine, but got back to even par with two birdies on the back. Tanida had a consistent second half of her round as she had 10 consecutive pars to end the day.
Freshmen Valery Plata and Haylin Harris both recorded 7-over-par 79s and are tied for 65th place.
Vanderbilt's Abbey Carlson is in first place individually after a 6-under-par 66.
With potential rain in the forecast for Sunday, the teams are now slated to play rounds two and three on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET.
