Geer in Second, Spartans in Fourth After Two Rounds of the Fossum Invitational

EAST LANSING -- The Michigan State women's golf team is in fourth place after two rounds of play on Saturday at the 35th annual Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West. MSU is 1-under-par 575 (291-284), four shots back of tournament leader Virginia. Georgia and Florida are tied for second place at 2-under-par 574.

MSU junior Allyson Geer-Park is in second place at 6-under-par 138 after shooting an opening round 4-under-par 68, followed by a 2-under-par 70 in round two. Geer-Park is just one shot behind Anna Redding of Virginia for the tournament lead.
Fellow MSU junior Paz Marfa Sans is tied for sixth place at 1-under-par 143, giving MSU two players in the top 10.
Geer-Park had just one bogey in her opening round and was 3-under-par on the back nine in carding a 68. She got to 2-under-par through hole No. 8 in round two and then recorded eight consecutive pars before a birdie and bogey to end the day.
Marfa Sans shot a 1-over-par 73 in round one, but caught fire on the back nine of round two with four birdies over the final six holes to shoot a 2-under-par 70.
Sophomore Yurika Tanida cut 10 strokes off her first round score with a career best 3-under-par 69 in round two. Tanida had six birdies in her second round and she's 4-over-par 148 for the tournament; tied for 28th place.
Freshman Haylin Harris picked up an eagle on the par-5, 497-yard eighth hole in her first collegiate round en route to a 2-over-par 74. She shot a 3-over-par 75 in round two and is 5-over-par 149; tied for 32nd place.
Rookie Valery Plata shot a pair of 4-over-par 76s and is 8-over-par 152.
The remainder of the Spartan team is playing in the tournament as individuals, including senior Jacqueline Setas, who is seeing her first action since 2016 after missing all of last season undergoing cancer treatments. Setas shot an even-par 72 in round one and is 8-over-par 152 for the tournament.
Catherine McEvoy is tied for 16th place at 1-over-par 145 (73-72).
This year's Mary Fossum Invitational features a deep field with seven of the teams (MSU, Florida, Georgia, Miami, Old Dominion, Texas Tech and Virginia) having taken part in last year's NCAA Tournament.
The third and final round of the Fossum Invitational is scheduled to begin Sunday at 9 a.m.
