MADISON, Wisc. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated Wisconsin, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wisc., to go 2-0 on the weekend.
MSU improves to 12-4 on the season and 3-1 in conference play, while the Badgers fall to 8-9 overall and 2-3 in Big Ten matches.
"I think our girls stayed positive, stuck to their game plan, worked hard and got it done on the road," head coach Kim Bruno said. "We're back on the road next weekend so it's good that we went out, had a quick turnaround but were able to get this solid win. We had some tough moments this match but it didn't phase us at all."
The Spartans started off the match by securing the doubles point to gain a 1-0 advantage going into singles, for the second time this weekend.
At No. 1 doubles, the duo of juniors Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen secured their second victory of the weekend with a dominating 6-2 win over Kelsey Grambeau and Lexi Keberle.
The doubles point was clinched on court two as senior Habiba Shaker and Sara Kuuttila defeated MaryAnn Rompf and Melissa Pick, 6-3.
Senior Lexi Baylis and freshman Ava Thielman were leading their match on court three, 5-4, against Sara Castellano and Michelle Linden.
The momentum carried over to singles play as four Spartans secured straight-set victories to clinch the match.
Metcalf pushed the Spartans lead as she secured her fifth-straight win, with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Grambeau at No. 4 singles.
Shaker then downed Castellano on court two, 6-4, 6-4.
The match was clinched at No. 3 singles as Kuuttila battled to a 6-0, 7-6 win over Rompf.
Nguyen also defeated Pick, 6-2, 6-3 on court five to give the Spartans a 5-0 lead over the Badgers.
After dropping her first set, sophomore Samantha Memije battled to a 3-6, 6-1, 14-12 victory over Linden at No. 6 singles.
It all came down to senior Aslina Chua on court one, who battled to three sets with Keberle but eventually fell 6-4, 6-7, 11-9.
Metcalf and Memije and Shaker all tallied their second singles win of the weekend.
"They've been getting wins when we've needed them to. That's what we need for everyone to do," Bruno said. "I think Habiba has stepped forward this weekend at the two spot getting us some wins."
The Spartans conclude their away slate of matches next weekend with Big Ten matchups against Penn State and Ohio State. The team will take on Penn State on Friday, March 30, with the match set to begin at 4:30 p.m. They will then finish their road matches for the season at Ohio State on Sunday, April 1, at 12 p.m
