
MSU Dominates Penn State On the Road, 5-2

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated Penn State, 5-2, on Friday evening. The team is now 13-4 on the season and 4-1 in conference play, while the Nittany Lions fall to 6-9 and 1-3.
"After not performing our best in doubles we knew we had a long night and a lot of work ahead of us. Instead of folding, we stepped up to the challenge and we came out ready to go in singles," head coach Kim Bruno said. "I am proud that we fought back and came up with the victory tonight."
At No. 1 doubles, juniors Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen fell to Samantha Smith and Shannon Hanley, 6-3, to put the Nittany Lions in the lead for the doubles point.
The doubles point was clinched on court three as Bennett Dunn and Gabby O'Gorman defeated senior Lexi Baylis and freshman Ava Thielman, 6-2.
The Spartans started off the match being down 1-0, but dominated in singles play to take the match.
On court four, Metcalf fell to Smith, 6-4, 6-2.
With the Spartans down 2-0, freshman Sara Kuuttila gave the team a spark with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over O'Gorman on court three.
At No. 2 singles, senior Habiba Shaker responded with her own victory over Hanley, 7-6, 6-1, to tie the match at two all.
Senior Aslina Chua defeated Frederikke Svarre at No. 1 singles in three-sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
The match was clinched at No. 6 singles as sophomore Samantha Memije defeated Hanna Wikberg, 6-2, 6-4, to give MSU its fourth victory of the evening.
Nguyen came back from behind after dropping her first set on court five, to down Bennett Dunn, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, to end the match.
The Spartans return to the court for their final road match of the season on Sunday, April 1 at No. 29 Ohio State, with the match set to begin at 12 p.m.
