
Wrestling Opens Big Ten Slate Against Indiana

EAST LANSING, Mich. -Â Michigan State opens its Big Ten schedule with a dual meet against Indiana on Friday, December 7. This marks the second time MSU head coach Roger Chandler has coached against his alma mater since being named head coach two seasons ago. Indiana arrives in East Lansing following a 20-14 dual win over Northern Illinois on November 30. Indiana previously finished runner-up to Michigan State at the 2018 Navy Classic held in Annapolis, Md. with a team score of 95.5 to MSU's 126.

SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS
Elijah Oliver holds a 1-2 record against MSU's Rayvon Foley, falling to Foley twice at the Big Ten Championships in 2017-18. Oliver defeated Foley during the IU/MSU dual earlier that season, 11-8. Garrett Pepple is tied for the Indiana team lead in falls this season with four, and is tied with fellow 141 pounder Kyle Luigs. 15th-ranked Cole Weaver is making his second appearance of the season, coming off a 3-0 season debut victory over Northern Illinois' Anthony Cheloni. Jake Danishek is third on the team in falls with three. Norman Conley made an appearance on the FloWrestling rankings this week at No. 20 due to a win over Virginia's No. 13-ranked Will Schany earlier this season.
CHANDLER TO COACH AGAINST ALMA MATER
Michigan State head coach Roger Chandler is set to coach against his alma mater, Indiana University, from the confines of Jenison Field House for the first time in his tenure as head coach at MSU. During the 2017-18 season, Michigan State defeated Indiana by a final score of 18-15. Potential starters Jake Tucker, Austin Hiles, Nick May and Christian Rebottaro all won bouts for MSU against the Hoosiers last season. Chandler was a three-time All-American while competing for the Hoosiers, named IU Male Athlete of the Year in 1996-97 and inducted into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008. Chandler placed eighth at NCAA Championships in 1995, third in 1996 and second in 1997. Chandler finished his career at Indiana with a 134-25 record and earned a degree in sport management.
EARLY SEASON SUCCESS
The Spartans opened their dual season strong with a 23-12 victory over Buffalo on November 28. This is the second time in the Roger Chandler era that MSU has started the season 1-0. Michigan State previously defeated Bloomsburg, 31-12, in its first dual of the 2015-16 season.
On November 17, Michigan State secured its first team title in four years at the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Maryland. Michigan State finished atop the leaderboard with 126 points, followed by 95.5 for second-place Indiana and 92 for third-place Navy.
MSU's last team tournament championship came on December 30, 2013 at the Cradle Gear Invitational hosted by Lock Haven University. The Spartans scored 105 points and had three individual champions that day in Nick Trimble, John Rizqallah and Mike McClure.
Sophomore Rayvon Foley (125) and redshirt freshman Cameron Caffey (184) each won titles at their weight classes. Foley and Caffey each took home titles at the MSU Open earlier in the season.
CAFFEY AND FOLEY TOP THE PODIUM
Cameron Caffey and Rayvon Foley have each started the season a perfect 9-0 with two championships apiece. Foley and Caffey each won their respective weight classes at the MSU Open and at the Navy Classic.
Foley has taken down a pair of ranked opponents thus far in Michigan's Drew Mattin (10) and Ohio's Shakur Laney (18). Caffey is yet to meet a ranked opponent this season in his nine chances. Neither will meet a ranked opponent in the dual against Buffalo. Foley has risen in the rankings to as high as No. 7 at 125 pounds by the Open Mat while Caffey is up to No. 13 via TrackWrestling.
