
Wrestling Defeats Indiana in Big Ten Action

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State Wrestling kicked off Big Ten conference action on Friday, December 7, pulling away with a 16-15 victory over Indiana.
MSU improves to 2-0 on the young dual season and is 1-0 in the Big Ten. Indiana dropped to 2-2 overall with a loss on Friday.
This is the first time the Spartans have opened the Big Ten slate with a victory since the 2004-05 season in which they upset a No. 15-ranked Penn State, 19-12. Against the Nittany Lions, MSU got wins from Max Lossen, Nick Simmons, Andy Simmons, Darren McKnight, Bryan Harney and R.J. Boudro.
No. 8-ranked Rayvon Foley started things off on the right foot for Michigan State earning a 12-5 victory over Liam Cronin to improve to 10-0 on the season. The Hoosiers responded by winning two consecutive decisions at 133 and 141 pounds to take a 6-3 lead over MSU.
Redshirt freshman Jaden Enriquez improved to 2-0 in duals at 149 pounds with a 5-3 win over IU's Breydon Bailey. Indiana responded by taking decisions at 157 and 165 pounds to maintain a 12-6 advantage over the Spartans at the intermission.
Redshirt sophomore Drew Hughes scored crucial bonus points for Michigan State at 174, scoring an 11-0 major decision over Jake Hinz to pull the score to 12-10 in favor of Indiana.
At 184 pounds, redshirt freshman Cameron Caffey gave MSU the lead for good with a 9-5 decision to defeat Norman Conley. Caffey is now 10-0 on the season and 2-0 in duals. This past week, Conley was ranked No. 20 at 184 pounds by FloWrestling.
Brad Wilton expanded the Spartans lead to 16-12 earning his first career dual victory in a match against Jake Kleimola. Indiana took the heavyweight division by a decison, but the points weren't enough to force a criteria decision for the dual.
Bout-by-Bout Breakdown
125: Rayvon Foley (MSU) dec. Liam Cronin (IU), 12-5
The first two period were all Foley as he scored three takedowns and an escape. He led 7-1 heading into the third period where Cronin was able to score two escapes and a takedown of his own to avoid a major decision.

Weaver earned a reversal with 30 seconds left in the bout to defeat Eicher in his season dual debut.

Enriquez led things off with a takedown, but Bailey scored the next two points on escapes leaving the bout tied heading into the third. Enriquez earned the decisive takedown with 1:45 remaining and added a point for riding time to improve to 2-0 in dual meets.

Facing a former NCAA qualifier, Tucker started strong earning a takedown in the first period. After a scoreless second, Danishek hit his stride with a takedown and a two-point nearfall to defeat Tucker in the closing moments.
165: Bryce Martin (IU) dec. Logan Ritchie (MSU), 8-3
Facing another opponent with NCAA championships experience, Ritchie fell victim to a pair of takedowns in the first period. Ritchie scored four escapes to avoid giving Indiana a major decision.

Hughes scored the bonus points that MSU needed to get the win on Friday, opening the bout with a takedown and a four-point nearfall in the first period. Hughes later added two penalty points and a two-point nearfall to earn a major decision over Hinz.

Caffey bolstered his season resume by working his way out of an early deficit against Conley, who took Caffey down just 15 seconds into the bout. The undefeated redshirt freshman responded accordingly however by escaping and taking down Conley before the end of the round. Wilton opened a 6-0 advantage over Kleimola earning two takedowns and a reversal over three periods before tacking on riding time at the end to clinch his first career dual victory.

Miller provided Rebottaro with an early lead committing a penalty as the bout kicked off, but took a 2-1 lead heading into the second with a late takedown.
