Spartan Soccer Hosts Maryland in B1G Tournament Quarterfinals

EAST LANSING, Mich. - No. 17-ranked Michigan State opens Big Ten Tournament play as the No. 4 seed. The Spartans will host No. 5-seed Maryland in the quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. in East Lansing. The game will be streamed on BTN Plus.
Overall, Michigan State is 10-3-4 overall and ended conference play with a 4-2-2 in league play. Maryland is 7-6-3 and 4-4-0 in Big Ten action.

B1G TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Michigan State is third in the Big Ten in tournament wins with a 20-23-3 record in the tourney. MSU has won tournament titles in 2004, 2008 and 2012. Â Indiana leads the B1G in tournament victories with a 34-11-8 record with 12 titles. Last season, No. 3-seed MSU fell to No. 6-seed Ohio State, 2-1 in East Lansing. Wisconsin captured the Big Ten tournament last season stopping Indiana, 4-2 on penalty kicks.

SCOUTING MARYLAND
The fifth-seeded Terrapins bring a 7-6-3 overall record into Sunday's B1G Tournament quarterfinal contest. Maryland went 4-4-0 in Big Ten action, losing at Michigan, 2-1, in OT last Sunday, as UM scored the game-winner in the 91st minute. After the Terps yielded an own goal in the 34th minute, freshman defender Brett St. Martin netted the tie-breaker in the 78th minute for his first collegiate goal, leveling the score, which remained tied through the end of regulation and into the extra session before UM's game-winner came just 27 seconds into OT to end the game.
UMD's loss at Michigan snapped a three-match win streak for the Terps, who after losing at Indiana, 2-1, on Oct. 12, beat Denver, 1-0, on Oct. 16 in non-conference action, then routed Ohio State, 5-0, on Oct. 19 and then edged Penn State, 3-2 in OT, on Oct. 23. The Terps are 3-3-1 on the road this season, but have gone winless in the last three outings with two losses and a tie.
Maryland is fifth in the B1G in scoring (1.19 goals/game), while ranking fifth in goals against average (0.88). Senior midfielder Amar Sejdic leads UMD in scoring and ranks tied for seventh in the B1G with six goals (0.31 pg), while senior defender Chase Gasper tops the team and ranks sixth in the conference with five assists, ranking second in the league with 0.56 assists per game. Sejdic and junior forward/midfielder Paul Bin share the team lead with 10 points.
Defensively, junior goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair has played every minute in net for the Terps this season and is tied for third in the B1G with seven shutouts, while ranking fourth in save percentage (.786) and fifth in both GAA (0.88) and saves with 55 (3.40 pg).

SERIES VS THE TERRAPINS
Overall, Michigan State holds a 6-3-4 overall record against Maryland, including 2-0-2 in East Lansing, as well as 0-1-1 in B1G Tournament action. The Spartans topped the Terps, 2-0, on Oct. 5 in College Park in this year's regular-season meeting. Sunday will be the third meeting in the B1G Tournament between MSU and UMD, matching up in the 2014 B1G Semifinals and playing to a 0-0 tie, but Maryland winning on PK's, 3-2. SECOND-HALF SURGE

OFFENSIVE DEFENDERS
This season, the Spartans have been getting offense from more than just their forwards. Â Defenders Patrick Nielsen and Michael Wetungu have both scored two goals this year and both have one game-winning goal. Â Fellow defender John Freitag has also added two goals and a game-winning goal. Before losing him to injury, defender Nick Woodruff also added a goal.

For the second-straight season, the Spartans are undefeated through the first eight games. In 2017, MSU was 7-0-1 through the first eight games before falling to Akron on Sept. 27. After defeating Penn State on Sept. 26, Michigan State tied for its best start since the 1974 team started the season 8-0-2. MSU suffered its first loss of the season against Wisconsin on Sept. 30.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Senior goalkeeper Jimmy Hague now has 25 career clean sheets in the Spartan Green and White, which now puts alone in second in the Spartan record books, passing Avery Steinlage (2008-10) and John Spink (1984, 86-88). MSU great Zach Bennett (2012-15) is the all-time shutout leader with 35.
MAKING AN IMPACT
This season, the Spartans have had five Spartans earn their first point this season.  Freshman forward Farai Mutatu is fourth in scoring with three goals and two assists  for eight points.  Sophomore Patrick Nielsen had two goals this season. Freshman Jack Beck and redshirt-freshman Nick Woodruff also scored their first goals of their collegiate careers in 2018. Junior Michael Wetungu also captured his first Spartan goal against Akron on Oct. 9.

MSU senior forward Ryan Sierakowski is rising up the Michigan State all-time scoring charts. He currently has 75 points in 69 games in a MSU uniform, which is good for 13th all-time. He has  30 goals and 15 assists in four seasons. His 30 goals place him tied for eighth with Zdravko Rom (1973-76). He is two points away from tying Rubens Filizola for 10th (1960-62) with 77 points.
DEFEND DEMARTIN
Michigan State has been solid at home over the last few years. The Spartans were 9-0-2 at home in 2016 and 7-1-2 last season. MSU's only loss came during the Big Ten Tournament last season. In 2018, the Spartans are 5-2-3 at home. Michigan State is 18-2-6 during the regular season in the last three years.

For the third-straight game the No. 12 Michigan State men's soccer team went to overtime, falling in the 98th minute to No. 2 Indiana, 1-0, Â on Sunday at a windy Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana.
The Spartans ended the regular season with a 10-3-4 overall and record and a 4-2-2 mark in the Big Ten Conference.
