Maryland scores in overtime to stop MSU.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- With a goal in the 98th minute, fourth-seeded Michigan State men's soccer saw its Big Ten Tournament run come to an end as fifth-seeded Maryland stopped the Spartans, 1-0, at DeMartin Stadium Sunday.
Eric Matzelevich scored his second goal of the season off the rebound after a terrific save by MSU senior goalkeeper Jimmy Hague.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 10-4-4 this season, while the Terps improve to 8-6-3.
"It was tough, I thought the first half Maryland came out and was pretty strong. We were a little sloppy on some stuff and you give some credit to Maryland, but I thought the second half we controlled large spells of the game and certainly in overtime. It was all us, but it was just unlucky not to finish it off and win the game," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "They counted off three of our corner kicks and got that goal, but I'm very proud of the effort of the guys. I thought we played pretty well in the second half. Maryland's a good team, in the second half I thought they were direct and called some stuff in the box, but other than that I thought we were very good in the second half and overtime,"
Senior goalkeeper Jimmy Hague was once again spectacular in goal for MSU. He tied his career-high with eight saves and was active on defense all game.
"I think I played pretty well; it's just unfortunate with that last chance right there that they put away. I thought the team played pretty well today. I think it was one of the best games that we've played together, so I'm proud of them for giving it our all. I thought we were the better team," Hague said.
Terps net-minder Dayne St. Clair earned his eighth shut out of the season, making five saves.
Action was back and forth throughout the first half, with both teams' defenses and keepers turning back the scoring opportunities. Maryland had a shot in the 21st minute that Hague made a great save one. Two minutes later the Spartans had a free kick from just outside the box, and junior midfielder Giuseppe Barone's shot got through the Terrapin wall but was saved by St. Clair.
Maryland increased its scoring chances but Hague made another diving save in the 28th minute, then junior defender Michael Pimlott and freshman defender Will Perkins had crucial stops in the 37th minute, keeping the match scoreless. The scoreboard stayed at 0-0 in halftime, with UMD holding a 7-3 shots advantage, with Hague making four first-half saves compared to one for St. Clair. Maryland also had a 4-2 cornder kicks edge.
Michigan State ramped up its pressure with freshman forward Farai Mutatu unleashing a firecracker that was saved and turned away by St. Clair in the 55th minute. Sophomore midfielder Michael Miller had a chance in the 60th minute but was again turned away by St. Clair.
The Spartans had another quality opportunity in the 78th minute when freshman midfielder Jack Beck blasted a left-footed firecracker volley that sailed just wide of the right post.
MSU had another chance in the 86th minute with Pimlott serving the ball into the box, where senior forward DeJuan Jones' bicycle attempt sailed high and wide of goal, keeping the match level at 0-0 into the end of regulation, setting up the extra session.
Both teams took three shots in a very active eight minutes of overtime. Giuseppe Barone's free kick after a Terp yellow card was the most dangerous for MSU, but the Spartans were shutout for the second-straight game.
Michigan State now awaits the NCAA selection show on Monday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m.
