NOTRE DAME, Indiana -- The Spartan men's golf team shot a 1-under-par 283 in the third and final round of the Fighting Irish Classic on Monday at the Warren Golf Course in Notre Dame, Indiana. Michigan State took ninth place in the field at 2-under-par 850 (280-287-283).
Illinois won the tournament at 44-under-par 808 (270-268-270), while Georgia State's Steven Fisk claimed individual medalist honors at 15-under-par 198 (64-69-65).
"We're obviously not playing as well as we need to be right now," MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said. "When you get into a situation on a course that's defenseless, you have to attack and we're just not hitting enough shots right now to get the birdies we need. When that happens, it can get away from you quickly.
"We have to have all five guys going and that's the focus this week."
Freshman Troy Taylor II led MSU as he was the Spartans' top finisher for the first time in his young career. Taylor was 3-under-par 210 (68-73-69) and tied for 21st place. Taylor started the final round with birdies on three of the first four holes and ended it with four pars and one birdie over the final five holes.
"Troy was good most of the weekend," Lubahn said. "He didn't have his best stuff, but he played solid and managed the course well. He'll continue to keep growing."
Sophomore James Piot and senior Donnie Trosper both finished at even-par 213, tying for 34th place. Piot was 3-under-par on the back nine on Monday, leading to a round of 2-under-par 69 – his lowest round of the tournament after a pair of 72s on Sunday.
Trosper carded a 2-over-par 73 on Monday after registering identical rounds of 1-under-par 70 on Sunday.
Junior Andrew Walker also shot a 2-over-par 73 on Monday and finished the tournament 2-over-par 215 (70-72-73), tying for 47th place.
Junior Kaleb Johnson had his best round of the tournament on Monday with a 1-over-par 72. He finished 10-over-par 223 (74-77-72).
The Spartans will be in action for the fourth consecutive week this coming weekend when they begin play on Sunday at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate in Vero Beach, Florida. The three-day tournament will take place at the Quail Valley Golf Club.
