Michigan State completes the regular season with a 10-3-4 record.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the third-straight game the No. 12 Michigan State men's soccer team went to overtime, falling in the 98th minute to No. 2 Indiana, 1-0, on Sunday at a windy Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana.
The Spartans ended the regular season with a 10-3-4 overall and record and a 4-2-2 mark in the Big Ten Conference. Indiana, the Big Ten regular season champion, improves to 15-2 overall and 8-0 in B1G play. Michigan State completed B1G action with three-straight overtime games with ties against Northwestern and Michigan. Overall MSU is 0-2-4 in extra time this season. Today was the Spartans' first road loss of the season.
"We certainly adjusted our game plan. We wanted to have the wind in the first half. We gained a lot of territory and moved the ball, but we just didn't test their goalkeeper. He is a good goalie, but we passed chances to take shots," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "I thought that we needed to be more aggressive in the first half. In the second half against the wind, we actually played really well."
How it happened...
After neither team found the back of the net in the first 90 minutes, the game moved to extra time. In the 98th minute, Andrew Gutman's initial shot was saved by MSU senior goalkeeper Jimmy Hague, but Justin Rennicks was there to gather the rebound and sneak the ball past Hague for the game winner.
Both teams spent much of the first half adapting to the blustery conditions. Neither team was able to get too much momentum going in the first 45 minutes. The teams both took six shots in the half as MSU was tied at half time for the ninth time this season.
The second half started with another stellar save by Hague after a blast from the Big Ten's leading scorer Gutman in the 47th minute. Hague's fingertip save kept the game scoreless. For the game, Hague made six saves in another solid performance by the senior.
"I thought that Jimmy Hague played exceptional tonight. I think that Indiana just took their chances better in the final third, and we have to credit them with the win," Rensing said.
In the 78th minute, the Spartans had its best chance of the second half. Junior midfielder Giuseppe's Barone's corner kick found the head of senior defender John Freitag. The ball was collected by Indiana goalkeeper Trey Muse for his first save of the game.
Overall, Indiana out-shot Michigan State 20-9, including 12-2 in the second half. The Hoosiers also had the edge in corner kicks, 12-7.
