Field Hockey Season Concludes in Big Ten Quarterfinals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --Â The Michigan State field hockey team fell to No. 2-ranked Maryland in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Sunday, October 28 by a final score of 6-0 in College Park, Md.
The Spartans finish their 2018 season with an overall record of 5-15. Maryland improves to 17-2 and advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday, November 2, where they will meet the winner of No. 4-seeded Rutgers and No. 5-seeded Ohio State.
MSU shutout in the match, tallying two shots and one shot on goal. Maryland earned 16 shots on goal during the contest. The Terps earned eight penalty corners compared to just two for the Green and White.
Freshman Jade Arundell played all 70 minutes in net for the Green and White, collecting nine saves. Senior Bailey Higgins recorded a defensive save in her final game for Michigan State.
Maryland put the game out of reach early, scoring three goals in the first half. The Terps first goal came off the stick of Linnea Gonzales in the fourth minute of game action.
Sophomore Meredith Ross recorded the Spartans lone shot on goal of the contest in the 11th minute of regulation as the Spartans aimed to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman Daphne Voorman recorded MSU's only shot of the second half as the final seconds ticked off the game clock.
Michigan State concludes it's 2018 schedule with 18 goals scored and 14 assists. Freshman Isa van der Weij finishes as the team's leading point getter with 11 on four goals and three assists. 10 different Spartans scored and eight recorded assists. Senior Madison O'Neill tied for the team-high in assists with three and Ross was second in goals with three. As a team, MSU recorded eight defensive saves with senior Amanda Robinson leading the charge with four.
Arundell wraps up her freshman campaign with a 2.98 goals against average alongside a .669 save percentage on 321 shots faced and 121 saves.
