DID YOU KNOW?
Senior forward DeJuan Jones was named a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. He and Michigan's Robbie Mertz are the only two members from Big Ten schools to be named  finalists. Last season, Jimmy Fiscus was also named a finalist.
SCOUTING INDIANA
The No. 2 Hoosiers head into their final game of the regular season with a 14-2 overall record and a 7-0 record in the Big Ten. So far this season, they have defeated five of their seven ranked opponents such as No. 3 North Carolina, No. 8 Notre Dame and No. 14 Michigan. Indiana claimed the Big Ten Title outright after their 1-0 win against Ohio State last Wednesday.Â
Indiana poses a strong presence on defense as their leading scoring is senior defender Andrew Gutman. Gutman has recorded nine goals and six assists already this season. Sophomore Griffin Dorsey, who has four goals, and redshirt-senior Trevor Swartz, who has ten assists, have played an essential role in the Hoosiers offense. With only a sophomore in goal, Trey Muse has recorded 36 saves and 10 shutouts this year.
The Hoosiers hold a series advantage of 40-16-5 over the Spartans. In the 2017-18 season, the two teams met twice once during regular season where they tied 1-1 in double overtime. The second came in the NCAA Quarterfinal game that went into penalty kicks where Indiana came out on top.
LAST TIME VS THE HOOSIERS
Michigan State's NCAA postseason run came to a heartbreaking end after tying 1-1 in overtime before falling, 3-2, on penalty kicks at Indiana on Dec. Â 1, 2017 in the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament at IU's Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
The Spartans' season ends with a 13-3-4 overall record, while IU advances to the College Cup with a 17-0-6 mark.
This was the second-straight season that MSU's campaign closed in similar fashion, ending on penalty kicks, 9-8, to SIU Edwardsville last year. It is also the second time in four years for the Spartans to reach the Elite Eight.
Jimmy Hague made a career-high eight saves, tying his previous career-best of seven in the first half alone. Many of those eight saves were of the spectacular variety, diving, sprawling and reaching to thwart Indiana's scoring threats.
SECOND-HALF SURGE
Michigan State has been a second-half scoring machine this season. The Spartans have scored six goals in the first half and 22 in the second. Last season, MSU netted 11 in the first and 16 in the final period of regulation.
TIME WINDING DOWN
Sunday is the regular-season finale for both the Spartans and the Hoosiers. Indiana have already captured the regular-season Big Ten title with 21 points and a perfect 7-0-0 league record. Wisconsin is second with 15 points and a 5-2-0 record. Michigan State stands third with 14 points and a 4-1-2 mark, while Maryland is fourth with 12.
OFFENSIVE DEFENDERS
This season, the Spartans have been getting offense from more than just their forwards. Â Defenders Patrick Nielsen and Michael Wetungu have both scored two goals this year and both have one game-winning goal. Â Fellow defender John Freitag has also added two goals and a game-winning goal. Before losing him to injury, defender Nick Woodruff also added a goal.
Â
FAST START SPARTANS
For the second-straight season, the Spartans are undefeated through the first eight games. In 2017, MSU was 7-0-1 through the first eight games before falling to Akron on Sept. 27. After defeating Penn State on Sept. 26, Michigan State tied for its best start since the 1974 team started the season 8-0-2. MSU suffered its first loss of the season against Wisconsin on Sept. 30.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Senior goalkeeper Jimmy Hague now has 25 career clean sheets in the Spartan Green and White, which now puts alone in second in the Spartan record books, passing Avery Steinlage (2008-10) and John Spink (1984, 86-88). MSU great Zach Bennett (2012-15) is the all-time shutout leader with 35.
MAKING AN IMPACT
This season, the Spartans have had five Spartans earn their first point this season.  Freshman forward Farai Mutatu is fourth in scoring with three goals and two assists  for eight points.  Sophomore Patrick Nielsen had two goals this season. Freshman Jack Beck and redshirt-freshman Nick Woodruff also scored their first goals of their collegiate careers in 2018. Junior Michael Wetungu also captured his first Spartan goal against Akron on Oct. 9.
RYAN'S RISEÂ
MSU senior forward Ryan Sierakowski is rising up the Michigan State all-time scoring charts. He currently has 75 points in 69 games in a MSU uniform, which is good for 13th all-time. He has  30 goals and 15 assists in four seasons. His 30 goals place him tied for eighth with Zdravko Rom (1973-76). He is two points away from tying Rubens Filizola for 10th (1960-62) with 77 points.
DEFEND DEMARTIN
Michigan State has been solid at home over the last few years. The Spartans were 9-0-2 at home in 2016 and 7-1-2 last season. MSU's only loss came during the Big Ten Tournament last season. In 2018, the Spartans are 5-2-3 at home. Michigan State is 18-2-6 during the regular season in the last three years.
THE SPARTANS VS. THE NCAA
This week in the NCAA statistics, Michigan State is 38th in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 1.75 goals per game. Saint Mary's is first in the nation in scoring with 3.07 gpg. The Spartans are 28th in the nation and third in the Big Ten in total goals with 28. This season, MSU is second in the country in corner kicks per game, averaging 7.06, while Michigan is first with 7.33.
Junior midfielder Giuseppe Barone is sixth in the nation in total assists with 10 in 16 games. On the defensive side of the ball, senior goalkeeper Jimmy Hague is 12th in the country in shutouts with 7.0.
SUPER SIERAKOWSKI
Senior forward Ryan Sierakowski is looking to become the first Spartan to lead the team in points for four-straight seasons. Sierakowski had 17 point as a freshman, 23 as a sophomore and 21 as a junior. He currently leads the team in scoring with five goals and four assists for 14 points.
LAST TIME OUT
No. 12 Michigan State men's soccer played Michigan to a 1-1 draw Tuesday night at a packed DeMartin Stadium in the Battle for the Big Bear Trophy, and the Spartans retain the trophy for the fourth time in the last six years with the tie.
MSU scored early in the second half on a goal from freshman defender Jack Beck, before UM countered in the second half, and neither team could get the game-winner, and the teams played to their first draw in the series since 2006.
"I've been in every single one, first game was in 2000. I guess that just means I'm old, but I've been in every single one and you kind of try to downplay it at times and then all of a sudden you get within 24 hours of game and you can't downplay it. It's just Michigan, Michigan State. You can just feel the intensity in warm-up, you can feel it out here, you know one play either way could change it and that's what makes it such a special rivalry and probably the best rivalry in Big Ten soccer," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said.
AROUND THE BIG TEN
Michigan State is second in the Big Ten in points scored with 91, averaging 5.69 points per game. Indiana is first with 107 for 6.69 ppg.
