Spartans Still in The Top 5 After Two Rounds at Quail Valley

VERO BEACH, Florida -- The Michigan State men's golf team shot a 4-under-par 284 for the second straight day on Monday at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate in Vero Beach, Florida. The Spartans are 8-under-par 568 (284-284) and will head into Tuesday's final round in fourth place at the Quail Valley Golf Club.

South Florida jumped into first place after going 13-under-par 275 on Tuesday; USF is 18-under-par 558 for the tournament.
The Spartans had two players shoot in the 60s on Monday as James Piot recorded his best round of the season at 4-under-par 68, while Kaleb Johnson shot a 3-under-par 69, which was also a season low.
Piot was even on the front nine and started the back on fire, recording three straight birdies and then picking up another on the 15th hole. He's 6-under-par 138 (70-68) and tied for seventh place.
Donnie Trosper birdied the 14th and 18th holes to card an even-par 72. He's 2-under-par 142 (70-72) and tied for 14th place.
Johnson's 3-under-par 69 was six shots below his opening-round score. Johnson, a Florida native, had three birdies and six pars on the front nine on Monday. He moved up 20 places into 29th at even-par 144 (75-69).
Andrew Walker shot a 3-over-par 75 on Monday and is 3-over-par 147 (72-75) for the tournament, tied for 44th place.
Troy Taylor II carded a 4-over-par 76; he's 4-over-par 148 (72-76) for the tournament.
Blake Elliott of McNeese State and Ryoto Furuya of South Florida are tied for the individual lead at 9-under-par 135.
The final round of the tournament will get underway for the Spartans at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
