EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State field hockey team fell to No. 21-ranked American by a final score of 1-0 Friday evening at Ralph Young Field.
The Spartans fall to 2-2 on the season while American improves to 2-1.
The game was a back and forth defensive battle with neither team really taking control of the ball through the first 39 minutes of play.
American scored its first and only goal of the game when Leah DiGiadomenico fired a shot into the back of the net at 40:39 unassisted.
The Spartans had two huge scoring opportunities in the second half, the first by redshirt senior back Lauren Bonness. Bonness sent a shot that was saved by the Eagles in the 53rd minute. Just eight seconds later, junior forward Madison O'Neill took a shot from the top of the circle that hit the post and just bounced out.
MSU resumes action Sunday morning when it hosts the Catamounts from Vermont. The match is slated for 11 a.m. at Ralph Young Field.
