DAVIS, Calif. -- The Michigan State University field hockey team earned its first win of the season when it defeated UC Davis Saturday afternoon, 2-1, at Aggie Field Hockey Facility in Davis, Calif.
The Spartans are now 1-1 on the season.
"Our two goals came from simple connections working up the field and we had been struggling to do that until today", said head coach Helen Knull. "UC Davis played an aggressive game today which was challenging for us at times. It was good for us to get our first win of the season and we are looking forward to a rest day tomorrow before finishing out our west coast swing against Cal on Monday."
The Green and White outshot the Aggies on the afternoon, 9-3 including a tally of 5-3 shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Katie Miller was in net for all 70 minutes for the Spartans, recording two saves on the day.
MSU was on fire early in the game with two shots on goal resulting in two scores in the first 15 minutes of play. Redshirt senior midfielder Kendal Anderson earned her first goal of the season on an assist from freshman midfielder Cara Bonshak in the 13th minute.
Just two minutes later the Green and White struck again when sophomore forward Kelsey Keener sent a shot that deflected off the left post and into the goal. Redshirt senior back Lauren Bonness tallied the assist for the Spartans on that marker. It was the first goal of the season for Keener.
MSU heavily controlled the first half, taking a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
The Aggies came out swinging in the second half, sliding one past Miller in goal and making it a 2-1 game in the 45th minute of play.
MSU wraps up its three-game roadtrip when it heads to California on Monday for a match slated to begin at 5 p.m. ET.
