
Spartans Down Western Michigan, 6-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team improved to 9-1 on the season with a 6-1 win over Western Michigan in Kalamazoo on Friday night. The Spartans started the night off right, winning two doubles matches to earn the point heading into singles play, where MSU picked up five wins, with each victory coming in straight sets.
"I am continuously impressed with this team," said head coach Kim Bruno. Every time we step foot on the court, we grow as a team. What an incredible performance tonight. We started off strong and continued it into our singles play."
Erin Faulkner and Allie Baer started off the Spartans with a 6-1 win at first doubles before Athena Trouillot and Samantha Memije won their eighth straight match together to give MSU the doubles point.
Sophomore Emily Metcalf was playing in her first match after appearing at No. 98 in the ITA National Tennis rankings this week. Metcalf picked up right where she left off after becoming the highest ranked Spartan tennis player by improving to 9-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 win at third singles.
Davina Nguyen improved to 12-5 with a win at fourth singles and Athena Trouillot won her sixth straight match at sixth singles. Lexi Baylis improved to 11-7 with a win in straight sets at fifth singles, and junior Aslina Chua got back on track with a 6-2, 6-1 win to pick up her team-high 15th win of the season.
The Spartans get right back at it with an 11 a.m. match on Saturday morning in South Bend as they take on No. 41 Notre Dame.
