EAST LANSING, Mich. - Behind the senior trio of Tori Jankoska, Taya Reimer and Branndais Agee, the No. 22 Michigan State women's basketball team stopped Wyoming 63-51 at the Breslin Center on Sunday.
Michigan State improved to 2-0 for the for the second-straight season. The Spartans have begun the season 2-0 three times in the past five seasons. Wyoming evens out its record to 1-1 with the loss.
For the second-straight game, Jankoska led the team in scoring with 22 points to go alone with four assists and two steals. Reimer added 18 points with seven rebounds and two assists in her second game in a Spartan uniform. Agee was close to her first double-double of the season with nine points and 10 rebounds.
In the first meeting between the two teams, both teams started slow in the first quarter. MSU was only 2-for-14 from the field in the first period, but was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.
A 6-0 run to end the third quarter pushed the MSU lead to 43-32. The Cowgirls shot their first free throws of the day to cut the lead to 45-34 at the end of the quarter. Jankoska scored seven points, playing all 10 minutes in the third quarter, while Reimer added six points and two assists in the period.
In the final period, Spartan lead grew to as big as 15 points, scoring nine points off of turnovers. The fourth quarter was the only one in which Michigan State held a double-figure lead the whole quarter.
The Spartans will conclude their season-opening three-game homestand on Tuesday, Nov. 15 against Southern. Michigan State started the season with a grueling three games in five days.
Postgame Notes
- No. 22 Michigan State improves to 2-0 on the season after a 63-51 win over Wyoming. This is the second-straight season the Spartans have started 2-0.
- Today's game was the first series matchup between Wyoming and MSU. The Spartans now hold the all-time series record over the Cowgirls, 1-0.
- Head coach Suzy Merchant is now 2-0 during her time at MSU against teams in the Mountain West Conference. Michigan State is 6-0 all-time against Mountain West schools.
- Today was Jankoska's 26th career 20-point game, and 23rd career game she has led MSU in scoring. The Spartans are 21-2 when Jankoska is the team's leading scorer, including 2-0 during the 2016-17 campaign.
- Michigan State did not allow Wyoming to get to the free throw line until 3:32 remaining in the third quarter.
- MSU moves to 2-2 all-time on Nov. 13, winning the last two on this date.
- Senior guard Branndais Agee brought in 10 rebounds, marking her second career-game for
- double-figure rebounding.
- Redshirt freshman Victoria Gaines recorded three career-highs in today's game. She played a career-high 25 minutes, notched a career-high 4 points, and tied a career-high of seven rebounds.
- Michigan State had 12 steals, and the last time the team had 12 or more steals was against Purdue (3/4/16) when it recorded 13.
- All five Spartan starters scored one or more baskets in the victory. MSU only had five bench points.
