In an action packed weekend, the Michigan State men's tennis team, comprised of all but one upperclassmen, fought its way through doubles and singles play Sept. 26 with freshmen Billy Shisler and Ivan Rakic posting the top finishes for the Spartans in singles.
Although head coach Gene Orlando says that the team came into the weekend expecting to do more, he said that there was much to take away from the first action of the fall season.
"I think we all had higher expectations and expected to do more," Orlando said. "At the end of the day, we learned a lot our first weekend out and figured out what we need to do to improve."
In doubles action, the pairing of junior Mac Roy and sophomore Michael Dube claimed third place in Flight A doubles.
Shining in singles for the Spartans were Shisler, who scrapped his way to a third place finish in Flight D, and Rakic, who made his way to the Flight E championship match to finish second.
With both posting good showings for their first weekend of collegiate action, Orlando praised the freshmen for competing well, stating that they will be looking to prove themselves as potential lineup players in the future.
Putting this weekend behind them, the team will look to address individual areas of improvement with three weeks to make adjustments before taking part in the ITA Midwest Regionals slated for Oct. 22-26.
