Spartan Men's Tennis Has Strong Showing

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -
The first round of doubles and singles play at the Vredevelt Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Sept. 25 featured a strong showing for the Michigan State men's tennis team, as they went 2-1 in doubles and 4-1 in singles play.
The semifinals of singles action were more exhausting for the Spartans, as freshman Ivan Rakic was the lone survivor of the second round.
Head coach Gene Orlando praised Rakic for outlasting his final opponent of the day, Michael Savaglio of Valparaiso, to make it to the championship round of singles Flight E.
"Ivan gutted out a tough three setter," Orlando said. "He's made some great improvements over the last three weeks, and he showed it today."
Orlando said that the first day of the invitational allowed the team to learn a lot about itself.
"We won some tough matches and lost some tough matches," Orlando said. "Tomorrow, we have the opportunity to make some adjustments and continue to develop our game."
