EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State fell to No. 22 Memphis at home on Thursday night, 5-2. The No. 60 Spartans didn't let the Tigers have the match easily, though.
"It's a tough loss," head coach Gene Orlando said. "When the match is that close, it stings a little more."
In front of a crowd of nearly 200, MSU landed the first punch. The Spartans won the doubles point behind a spectacular effort from Jasper Koenen and Doug Zade, as well as Gijs Linders and Brett Forman.
Forman continued his strong play into his singles match, where he won at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-2.
Memphis was able to win the rest of the singles matches.
Linders, Koenen and Harry Jadun all fell behind early in their first sets. Linders lost his first set, 6-0, and was down in the second, 4-1, but fought back hard to fall in a tiebreaker. Koenen came back from a 4-0 deficit in the first set before ultimately losing it 7-5. Jadun recovered from a 5-1 deficit to fall in a tiebreaker.
"My teammates made me a better player with the way they played," Jadun said. "I personally laid it all out on the court, and I know they did too."
The match ultimately came down to Jadun and John Patrick Mullane, with Michigan State down 3-2. Mullane battled back against No. 40 Andrew Watson after losing the first set, but Watson took the match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
"There was great energy in the stands," Orlando said. "The guys played their hearts out."
The Spartans drop to 7-5 on the season.
