EAST LANSING, Mich. â€" Michigan State field hockey took a 3-2 overtime victory over Indiana off of a sudden-victory goal from redshirt junior Adrea Donaldson on Friday. The Spartans move to 5-8 on the season, 2-3 in the Big Ten after their second overtime victory in 2015.
"For me, as a coach, this is the first week I thought we had a really solid week of practice and we executed today in the game," said head coach Helen Knull. "We put a week of practice together that resulted in a win on Friday, which is what we've been working towards."
The Hoosiers struck first in the Big Ten matchup, taking a 1-0 lead off of a goal from Hoosier leading-scorer Maddie Latino in the 21st minute of play. The unassisted goal was the result of a hard shot off of a goalie deflection.
Spartan leading scorer Sophie Macadre answered back in the next minute, scoring her seventh goal of the season off of a pass from freshman Bailey Higgins at 21:42 to tie the game 1-1. Macadre was honored with Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors on Tuesday after her four-goal, two assist performance last weekend.
Senior Heather Howie scored at the 24:57 mark to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead that would remain until after halftime. The goal was scored off of a pass from senior Mallory Tyler, her first assist of the season.
"We've been really honing in on ourselves and I thought we made huge strides with our possession and our ability to work the ball up the field," said Knull.
The Hoosiers tied the game at 2-2 in the second half off of a goal from Latino, her second of the game and eighth of the season. The goal, scored at 62:51, was converted off of a long pass from freshman Claire Woods, who was credited with the assist.
At the end of regulation, the Spartans and the Hoosiers were tied at 2-2, sending the game to overtime. The Spartans have gone to overtime two out of the last three games, beating Rutgers 5-4 in a double-overtime sudden victory last Friday.
Donaldson was able to find the back of the net for the Spartans just 1:14 into overtime, and was credited with the unassisted game-winning goal, the first of her collegiate career.
"Once I saw it go in, I couldn't keep a smile off of my face," said Donaldson. "I was so excited, more so for the team because we've been working so hard, but haven't necessarily gotten the results. We finally got the result, and I'm just really happy for the team."
Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Miller started in net for the Spartans for the third-straight game, recording eight saves in the contest. Miller moves to 2-1 on the season.
The Hoosiers outshot the Spartans 17-7, including a 7-3 edge in penalty corners, but were unable to overcome the Spartans efficient offense, which scored three goals on seven shots.
Up next, the Spartans will travel to Athens, Ohio to face Ohio University in a non-conference matchup on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
"At the moment every opponent, for us, is a tough game," said Knull. "We've got to put together 70 minutes of hockey. Coming into our second game of the weekend, we're looking to execute on the road."
