Spartans Stopped by Bobcats, 4-1, on Sunday

EAST LANSING, Mich. â€" Michigan State field hockey fell to Ohio, 4-1, in a non-conference matchup on Sunday. The Spartans move to 5-9 on the season overall.
The Spartans and Bobcats each found the net in the 25th minute of play, quickly taking the game to a 1-1 contest, a score that held up through the first half. Senior Adele Sammons' unassisted goal at 25:34 gave the Bobcats a brief 1-0 edge over the Spartans, but MSU senior Heather Howie wasted no time, answering back just 13 seconds later to make it a 1-1 game. The goal, scored off of a corner and assisted by junior Kristin Matula, was Howie's fifth of the season.
Ohio took a timeout at 45:37, which sparked two second-half goals to give the Bobcats a 3-1 lead over the Spartans. Senior Clarissa Leickly scored the first of the two off of a penalty corner, which was assisted by Sammons. The third goal of the day was scored on a breakaway by sophomore Maria Russell and assisted by freshman Emma Eggleston at 56:18.
Sophomore Elena Curley scored at the 64:35 mark off of a pass from Kristen Buchannan giving the Bobcats a 4-1 advantage over the Spartans. The goal was converted off of a penalty corner.
The Spartans were unable to convert on the offensive end of the field, recording just nine shots and one goal in the contest.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Miller started in net for the fourth straight game, recording nine saves on 17 shots faced, allowing four goals.
Up next, the Spartans will hit the road for two Big Ten games, playing at Iowa on Friday, Oct. 16 at 4:30 p.m. before traveling to Northwestern on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m.
