Spartans Topped, 5-1, by No. 9 Louisville on Friday

EAST LANSING, Mich. â€" The Spartans sufferd a 5-1 loss to No. 9 Louisville in the final regular-season game of the year on Friday. The Spartans move to 5-13 on the season heading into the Big Ten Tournament.
Louisville's Nicole Woods struck first, scoring an unassisted goal in the sixth minute of play off of a rebound to put the Cardinals up 1-0. The Spartans answered with an unassisted goal from junior Kristin Matula, making it a 1-1 game in the 12th minute. The goal marks Matula's fourth of the season.
Louisville went on to score four unanswered goals in the matchup. Freshman Tess Hannah found the back of the net off of a penalty corner in the 20th minute to take a 2-1 lead over MSU. Junior Erin McCrudden recorded an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute to make it a 3-1 Louisville advantage heading into halftime.
Senior Victoria Stratton scored in the 38th minute off of a penalty corner assisted by senior Katharine Gwynne-Wood and senior Megan Anstotz, making it a 4-1 game. Gwynne-Wood tipped in a penalty corner shot for the final goal of the game assisted by senior Elisa Garcia.
The Spartans, who were held to just five shots and two penalty corners, scored at least one goal for the 16th game this season and broke a two-game shutout streak.
The trip to Louisville served as a homecoming for freshman Bailey Higgins, junior Kristin Matula, senior Claire Johnson and senior Mallory Tyler, who are all originally from Louisville.
Up next, the Spartans will head to Bloomington, Indiana for the 2015 Big Ten Tournament. Under head coach Helen Knull, the Spartans are 3-3 in the Big Ten Tournament, highlighted by a Big Ten Tournament Championship in 2013.
