TULSA, Okla. - In the ITA Men's All-American Championships, the Spartans continued their strong showing, as John Patrick Mullane advanced to the main qualifying draw.
Mullane, the No. 7 seed in the pre-qualifying draw, earned a bye in the first round. He defeated Alberto Esteban of Tennessee Tech in the second round, 7-5, 7-6(3). In the third round, Mullane bested TCU's Will Stein, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Mullane then won his final pre-qualifying match against Jayson Amos of Oregon, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Mullane will face Columbia's Ashok Narayana in the first round of the main qualifying draw Monday morning at 9 a.m.
"It's a good start to the year," assistant coach Damian Hume said. "I'm excited for what we can achieve this year."
After advancing to the third round of pre-qualifying play, Brett Forman topped Texas A&M's Frankie Colunga, 6-2, 6-1. Alex Ghilea, the No. 15 seed from Oklahoma, defeated Forman in the fourth and final round of the pre-qualifying draw, 2-6, 7-6(9), 6-1.
"They've played awesome tennis, they're represented MSU well," said Hume. "JP and Brett had some tough matches, but they kept competing and fighting until the end."
The Michigan State men's tennis team closed out the last day of the Vredevelt Invitational on Sunday, with two Spartans finishing undefeated in singles play. "We won a lot of matches," head coach Gene Orlando said. "It was a good start for us."
Mac Roy and Harry Jadun reached the championship match in the Flight B bracket. However, because they are on the same team, they did not play each other. Instead, Roy and Jadun swapped their previous opponents, Andrew Cahn of WMU, and Xavier's Jeremy Schneider. Roy topped Cahn, 6-3,3-6, 6-4, and Jadun beat Schneider, 6-3, 6-4. Both Spartans finished 3-0 in singles play.
"We opted to play the other's semifinals opponent," said Orlando. "We weren't there to play each other. It's a quality tournament and everyone there is good."
In the championship match in the Flight A bracket, WMU's Mike Steiner defeated Gijs Linders, 6-1, 6-2.
In the Flight E bracket championship match, Colorado State's Manuel Belutti topped Michael Dube, 6-3,6-3.
