Softball Takes Purdue Series

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Michigan State softball took the series against Purdue after edging the Boilermakers on Sunday afternoon, 1-0. Junior Kelly Smith pitched for MSU and notched seven strikeouts, while senior Jayme O'Bryant scored the lone Spartan run.

In the top of the second, O'Bryant reached second base with a hit to left centerfield. Sophomore Ellie Stoffer reached first on an error by Purdue's first baseman from a sacrifice hit. Stoffer was out at second as O'Bryant crossed the plate to score the only run of the game.

The final five innings went scoreless giving MSU its seventh shutout of the season. The Spartans are now 21-14 on the season overall and 7-1 in conference games.

On the mound for MSU, Smith pitched her 17th complete game as she improved her record to 16-7 on the season after holding the Boilermakers scoreless. Smith allowed only three hits by Purdue (15-22, 3-6).

Junior Dana Briggs went 1-for-2 at bat to lead the Spartans.

MSU will host Central Michigan at Secchia Stadium on Tuesday, April 9, at 5 p.m.
