
Softball Falls to Notre Dame

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State softball suffered a loss to Notre Dame on Tuesday evening at Secchia Stadium. The Spartans fell 2-0 to the Fighting Irish. In the circle, junior Kelly Smith tallied six strikeouts to move into fourth for single-season pitching records with 180. MSU owns a 21-18 overall record and 7-4 in conference games.
After two scoreless innings, Notre Dame (30-10) scored the first run of the game in the top of the third with a home run to right field.
The fourth and fifth innings went scoreless before the Fighting Irish scored their second run of the game to take a 2-0 lead over the Spartans. MSU was unable to score in the seventh, finalizing the score at 2-0.
Smith allowed two runs, both earned, in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Freshman Dani Goranson took over in the top of the sixth and held the Fighting Irish to no runs in 1 1/3 innings pitched.
Leading the Spartan offense, sophomore Alyssa McBride, sophomore McKinzie Freimuth and senior Kylene Hopkins all went 1-for-3.
Laura Winter improved her record to 19-8 on the season after holding MSU scoreless.
Next up, Michigan State faces Toledo on Wednesday, April 17, at 4 p.m. at Secchia Stadium. The Spartans head to Minnesota for this weekend's series.
