East Lansing, Mich.- - Michigan State field hockey defeated No. 18 Iowa, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon, led by Katherine Jamieson's three goals. The Spartans finish the regular season 9-9 and 4-2 in the Big Ten.
"Last week we really talked and emphasized focusing on the process, not the outcome of the game," said head coach Helen Knull. "Our corner execution was outstanding today and Katherine Jamieson came up big scoring 3 goals. Molly Cassidy had a solid game in goal and the team really stayed focus when Iowa started to come back. I am proud of how they stuck to and executed the game plan to come away with the win."
MSU struck early when Abby Barker scored her team-high 11th goal of the season 1:16 into the game. The Spartans then opened up a two-goal lead on Katherine Jamieson's first goal of the game.
The Hawkeyes got on the board in the 26th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Jamieson tacked on another goal before the half and the Spartans took a 3-1 lead into the break.
MSU picked up right where they left off, as Jamieson scored her third goal of the game just 53 seconds into the second half to make it 4-1. The Hawkeyes made a push with two unanswered goals to make it 4-3 in the 47th minute, but the Spartan defense held strong for the remainder of the game and held off the comeback.
Molly Cassidy made nine saves in the game.
Michigan State travels to Columbus, Ohio to begin play in the Big Ten Tournament. Seedings for the Tournament will be released on Sunday, once the regular season is completed. The first round will take place on Thursday, November 6th.
