Men's Tennis Falls to No. 3 Ohio State

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team started off Big Ten season with a tough matchup against No. 3 Ohio State. The Spartans were unable to hold off the undefeated Buckeyes and suffered a hard-fought 7-0 defeat. MSU was able to take four singles matches into the third set but were not able to pick up any victories.
The Spartans fell behind in the match after doubles play as Ohio State picked up the first point of the day. The Buckeyes were able to sweep MSU in doubles even after a hard fought match on court two. Denis Bogatov and Gijs Linders fell on court three by a score of 8-1 to McCarthy and Van Engelen, followed by a 8-3 loss on court one by Aaron Pfister and Drew Lied to Buchanan and Rola. Austin Brooks and Harry Jadun kept it close until the end but were unable to pick up a win as they fell 8-6 to Kobelt and Smith.
Continuing into singles play the Buckeyes continued their winning streak. Chase Buchanan defeated Aaron Pfister 6-1, 6-0 on court one followed by a victory by Rola on court two 6-2, 6-2 over Denis Bogatov. On court four Austin Brooks fought hard winning the first set however he lost the next two suffering a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 defeat.
The next three matches all came down to the final set in close matches to finish out the day. Ronnie Hulewicz fought hard in three sets but lost in a tiebreaker in the final set 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6), 10-6 on court three. On court five Connor Smith defeated Drew Lied 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. To finish out the match McCarthy finished the sweep for the Buckeyes with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Gijs Linders.
MSU hosts their second doubleheader of the season at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Saturday, Feb. 18 taking on Western Michigan at 10 a.m. and Dayton at 6 p.m.
