BOSTON, Mass. - Scoring on its only shot on goal of the game, the No. 13 Michigan State field hockey team fell to No. 19 Boston University, 3-1. Freshman Allie Ahern scored her second career goal to give MSU its lone score of the afternoon. MSU is now 0-3 and will face Northeastern tomorrow, Sept. 5th, in attempt to notch their first win of the season.
"It was a tight first half. Allie Ahearn scored a beautiful goal in the corner," said head coach Helen Knull. "In the second half BU finished up on their opportunities but overall we need adjustments in our game plan. We're learning and making adjustments, but we just need to get the ball in the goal and get a `W'. Molly Cassidy was solid in goal for us and its good having Angie Lucik back. The nice thing is that we have tomorrow to get back at it."
The Terriers were able to get on the scoreboard first at 9:24 when Macey Gaumond scored her fourth goal of the season off of a rebound at the goalmouth. The Spartans were able to knock in the equalizer at off of a corner play at 14:24 when Ahern blasted in a shot past goaltender Valentina Cerda. Senior Angie Lucik had the assist on Ahern's tally.
BU's Andrea Greene would score the eventual game-winner with less than 10 minutes remaining in the second half. Greene received a pass from Tabi Hatch and was able to beat redshirt sophomore goaltender Molly Cassidy above the left post.
Boston University scored their third goal when Jacinda McLeod tallied her third goal of the season five minutes into the second half. The Terriers dominated on offense, notching 13 shots to MSU's three. BU held the slight advantage in corners, 5-4. Both teams had a player receive a green card. The Terrier's Giovanna Monaco was awarded one at 19:22 and freshman Jenni Smith got hers at 61:14.
Cassidy ended the match with six total saves. Junior Adelle Lever recorded her first defensive save of the year.
The Spartans wrap up play on the east coast against Northeastern on Monday Sept. 5th at 2 p.m.
