BOSTON, Mass. - Failing to score a goal for the first time this season, the No. 13 Michigan State field hockey team was blanked by Northeastern, 5-0, on Sunday in Boston, Mass. Redshirt sophomore goaltender Molly Cassidy stood strong to the Northeastern offense, tallying a season-high and tying her career-high saves per game with 14. The Spartans are now 0-4 this season.
Crystal Poland led the Northeastern offense with her second hat trick of the season. It didn't take her long to net her first goal of the game when she received the ball from Nicky Graham and Carolyn Malloy off of a penalty corner a 1:07 into the match.
The Spartan defense would hold Poland off until 3:38 into the second half when she gathered her own rebound and tallied her second goal of the game. Her hat trick was completed roughly ten minutes later off of another penalty corner. Kaela Barker was awarded a penalty stroke in the 56th minute and was able to convert on her opportunity. Annie Clayman scored the final goal for the Huskies.
Michigan State's backfield tried its best to hold off NU - Cassidy recorded 14 saves and both junior Adelle Lever and Angie Lucik notched two defensive saves. Redshirt junior Chelsy Coil and freshman Heather Howie each received green cards in the match.
The Spartans put up 15 shots to Northeastern's 28 and were edged by the Huskies in penalty corners, 13-5. Both junior Kristen Henn and Allie Ahern led the team in shots with five apiece.
The Spartans return to the road next weekend, traveling to Oxford, Ohio to take on Virginia and Miami of Ohio. The Cavaliers and Spartans match up at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10th. MSU will then face the Redhawks on Sunday, Sept. 11th at 2 p.m.
