MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Michigan State softball team (18-24) fell to Central Michigan today (April 22), 5-1, in its third game in two days. The Chippewas improved to 22-13 on the year with their win. Junior Jessica Bracamonte led the Spartans with a triple and a run.
"I thought we played well defensively," said head coach Jacquie Joseph. "We just couldn't take care of our opportunities when we had them. We left eight on base and that was pretty much the story of the game. We didn't pitch well enough, but you have to give Central Michigan credit because they played inspired ball for Coach Jonker today."
Trailing MSU 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Central Michigan used a four-run inning in the bottom half to power past the Spartans. A home run from Jill Schultz was all CMU needed, as Schultz recorded a three-run blast to center field.
Bracamonte led off the fourth with a triple to right-center field. Senior Kelly Confer singled up the middle to bring in Bracamonte for MSU's lone run of the game and the 1-0 lead.
The Chippewas tacked on an extra run in the bottom of the six to bring to score to its final resting place, 5-1.
Kari Seddon (12-7) earned the win for CMU in her seven innings of work. Sophomore Lauren Kramer falls to 13-13 on the season with the loss in four innings of work.
The Spartans travel to West Lafayette, Ind., for their last midweek doubleheader of the season against Purdue. Action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET.
