BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Michigan State softball team (4-10) opened action at the Miken Classic on Saturday, March 6. In its first game against Florida State, MSU fell 3-1. The Spartans rebounded against Eastern Michigan with a 3-0 win. Junior Lindsey Hansen led MSU on the day with her .500 batting average and four RBIs.
"I thought we played well in both games today," said head coach Jacquie Joseph. "We responded well today after what I would like to call the Northridge debacle last weekend. Florida State had a pitcher we were just unable to compete against and couldn't muster the timely hits, until the end."
In game one against Florida State, MSU fell behind early, trailing 2-0 at the end of the first inning. The Seminoles got on the board with a two-run double to right by Tory Haddad, scoring Robin Ahrberg and Shayla Jackson from second and third, respectively.
FSU got back on the board in the fourth inning when Tiffani Brown singled to center to score Morgan Bullock. The Florida State run brought the score to 3-0.
After six scoreless innings, the Spartans scored their only run when Hansen recorded her team leading sixth home run of the season to left.
Taking the loss for MSU was senior Kelly Confer (0-4) while Sarah Hamilton (9-1) of FSU earned the win.
The Spartans responded in the second game against Eastern Michigan with a three-run second inning. Hansen continued her early season success when she cleared the bases with a three-run double to center, scoring freshman Kylene Hopkins, and juniors Heidi Purtzer and Jessica Bracamonte, bringing the score to 3-0.
Sophomore Lauren Kramer (3-4) limited EMU to four hits in seven scoreless innings of work to earn the win for the Spartans. Jamie Melchert (2-2) took the loss for the Eagles.
MSU is back in action tomorrow (March 7) against Florida A&M and Miami (Ohio) at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
