EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team (11-4) concluded its non-conference schedule with 6-1 wins over both Eastern Illinois and Dayton on Saturday (March 13) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. With the two wins, the Spartans extend their win streak to four matches as they head into conference action. Both freshman Denis Bogatov and sophomore Ronnie Hulewicz led all Spartans with three wins on the day.
MSU, as it has done in every win this season, again earned the doubles point over its opponent. The Spartans saw sophomore Austin Brooks and junior John Stratton post an 8-6 win over Justin Haag and Jeff Rutherford of EIU at No. 1 doubles. The No. 1 doubles pairing has won its last three matches together. At No. 2 doubles, Bogatov and junior Clark Richardson won their third-consecutive match when they topped Matyas Hilgert and Warren Race, 8-4. Completing the doubles sweep for the Spartans was the tandem of freshman Will Davis and senior Brendan Kinkopf. Together, Davis and Kinkopf defeated Jamie Firth and Michael Sperry, 8-7 (5), at No. 3 doubles.
Hulewicz got the Spartans started at the No. 1 singles position when he topped Rutherford, 6-2, 6-3. Brooks followed suit with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Race at No. 2 singles. Earning a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles was Bogatov over Haag, while Norville earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Firth. Senior Joe Vallee earned the sixth Spartan point at No. 5 singles when he outlasted Sperry, 7-5, 6-2.
Spartans began doubles action against the Flyers with wins at all three positions. Vallee and Norville topped Matt Sherman and Bryce Warnock, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles, while Richardson and Bogatov topped Robbie McCallum and Joes West, 8-3, at No. 2. Hulewicz and freshman Christian Roehmer completed the sweep with a 8-6 win over Robert Salcedo and Austin Weigand. With the doubles win over Dayton, MSU has won the doubles point in four consecutive matches.
Hulewicz achieved his third win of the day when he topped Sherman at the No. 1 singles position, 6-1, 6-0. Brooks followed suit in the No. 2 position when he defeated West, 6-3, 6-0. Stratton and Richardson each topped their Dayton opponents at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Stratton downed McCallum, 6-1, 6-3, while Richardson won against Salcedo, 6-1, 6-1. Kinkopf posted the final MSU win in singles play when he topped Bryce Warnock at No. 5 singles, 7-6, 6-0.
The Spartans will next be in action on Saturday, March 20, when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the opening match of Big Ten competition against Michigan. First serve is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
