* Saturday's attendance of 113.411 was the largest crowd for a outdoor hockey game and a representative from the Guinness Book of World Records was on hand to certify the attendance, which set a new World Record. The previous world outdoor record was 74,544 fans when Germany played the United States in the IIHF World Championship on May 7, 2010 at the Veletins Arena, Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
* Saturday's attendance also set an NCAA record for attendance at a collegiate sporting event.
Today's game was the fifth outdoor game in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey history. MSU and Michigan have faced off in two of them.
Today's game was played on Olympic size ice, 200' x 100', rather than a NHL rink, 200' x 85', which is featured in each of the school's home ice arenas. The Spartans are now 1-2-0 this season on Olympic ice.
Michigan State has now suffered shutouts in back-to-back games, as they dropped a 1-0 OT decision to Ferris State on Dec. 4 and tonight's 5-0 decision. It was just the second time in school history that the Spartans had been shut out in back-to-back games in the same season: the first was in 2009, on Feb 21 (vs. Bowling Green 4-0) and Feb. 27 (vs. Notre Dame, 5-0)
Michigan went 3-for-4 on the power play, the worst kill for the Spartan all season. MSU allowed three goals in five chances to Maine in the season opener.
