East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State netted three first-period tallies en route to a 4-0 shutout victory over Ohio State on Saturday at Munn Ice Arena. Brett Perlini (two goals and an assist), and Derek Grant (three assists) led the Spartans, while Daultan Leveille and Torey Krug each had two-point nights as the Spartans rebounded from a disheartening overtime loss on Friday to shut out the Buckeyes.
Drew Palmisano made 22 saves in his third career shutout, and first of the season. MSU is now 4-3-3 overall, 2-3-1-0 in CCHA play, and snaps a three-game losing streak. Ohio State is 5-6-0, 2-4-0-0 in conference games.
Perlini's seventh goal of the season put the Spartans on the board just 3:06 into the game. Perlini's chip shot from the left circle hopped past Cal Heeter. Assists went to Daultan Leveille and Torey Krug.
The Spartan captain put his team up by a pair with an outstanding individual effort at 9:08. Derek Grant sent the puck towards the offensive zone, and his line headed for a line change as Krug carried it over the blue line to allow more time for the change. Krug maneuvered around two defenders at the left point, and shot from just above the left dot, and his shot found its mark past Heeter blocker-side for the sophomore's second goal of the season. Jake Chelios added a third for the Spartans at 14:44 on the power play, popping one into an empty side of the net as he pounced on a rebound. Grant and Perlini were credited with the assists. It was Chelios' second goal of the weekend, both coming on the PP.
The teams skated through a scoreless middle and third frame, and the closest chance at a goal came from the Buckeyes when with 5:30 left in the second period, Cory Schneider rang the post. Palmisano, who was named the game's first star, came up with all the saves - both challenging and routine, to keep the Buckeyes off the board. The Spartans got the final marker, an empty-net tally, from Perlini to end the evening's scoring.
Palmisano made 22 saves in his third career shutout. Cal Heeter stopped 26 shots for Ohio State.
The Spartans will be back in action with a road series next weekend, when MSU travels to South Bend to tangle with Notre Dame.
