East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State and Alaska skated to a 1-1 tie in regulation, and Alaska was awarded a victory in the shootout to earn the extra point in the league standings. Alaska got the shootout win thanks in part to a disputed non-goal call against Dean Chelios in the first round of the shootout.

Chelios was MSU's first shooter in the shootout. He went in, moved to his left, toe-dragged the puck just above the goal line, and shot it in over the shoulder of Scott Greenham. The official, however, vehemently waved off Chelios' goal, with the explanation that the winger had halted the forward motion of the puck. While Brett Perlini did notch a shootout marker for MSU as the third shooter, Colton Beck and Ryan Hohl potted the second and third Alaska attempts to record the shootout victory.
The pace and tempo of the game was different than was offered last week by an up-tempo, offensive-minded Maine team. Alaska brought its defense-first, lockdown style into tonight's contest, and both goalies were up to the task. Drew Palmisano finished with 27 saves, while Scott Greenham made 27 for the visiting Nanooks. Alaska was 1-for-4 on the man advantage, while MSU went scoreless in four tries. Both teams had just four minor penalties in the contest.
The visiting Nanooks got on the board first, potting a power-play tally by Cody Kunyk at 10:33 of the opening frame. Colton Beck pushed the puck from the right corner out into the slot; it deflected off the stick of an MSU defender and onto the stick of Kunyk in the left circle and the freshman buried it for his third goal of the season.
Michigan State knotted the score at 15:40 of the stick of alternate captain Trevor Nill. Nill received the puck in the high slot from Mike Merrifield, made a nifty spin move above the hashmarks, and lifted the puck over the right shoulder of Scott Greenham, beating the goalie stick-side.
NOTES: The Spartans and Nanooks went to overtime for the second straight time in the series. The teams settled on a 1-1 deadlock in game two of their series last February in Fairbanks, and the Spartans took the extra point in the standings in the shootout in that contest by a 2-1 margin ... Michigan State outshot Alaska, 31-28; it was the first time in three tries this season that MSU outshot its opponent ... Michigan State allowed an opponent to score first for the first time this season. MSU had put the first goal of the game on the board in each of the two games in the Maine series ... Trevor Nill's second-period goal was his first of the season, and Anthony Hayes picked up his first point of the season with his secondary assist ...
