Spartans Finish Drobac Invite with Four Champions

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team concluded the Stan Drobac Invitational today (Oct. 10), taking the championship in two doubles flights and two singles flights.
Sophomnore Denis Bogatov and junior Ronnie Hulewicz both finished the weekend undefeated in singles play, as Bogatov defeated Swanson of Green Bay, 6-3, 6-1, to earn the one singles champion spot, while Hulewicz earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Finkenbrink of Green Bay to take the championship at two singles.
Five other Spartans concluded the weekend with victories, as senior John Stratton defeated Nunez of Detroit, 3-6, 6-3 (10-4), and freshman Aaron Pfister defeated Butts, also of Detroit, 6-1, 6-1, at the five singles spot. Fellow freshman Drew Lied defeated Brown of Detroit with the same score of 6-1, 6-1 at seven singles competition. Sophomores Will Davis and Chirstian Roehmer concluded singles play for the Spartans with victories over Pretorious (7-6 (6), 6-3) and Diaz (6-3, 6-4), both of Xavier.
In doubles play, Boagatov and Hulewicz continued an impressive weekend performance by defeating Escobar and Latosinsky of Detroit 8-1 to seal the two doubles crown. Pfister and Richardson earned the second flight championship at the four spot, defeating Canelas and Mei of Xavier, 8-2. Stratton and junior Austin Brooks defeated Stabley and Cheung of Detroit, 8-3, at the one singles matchup, Senior Jason Norville and Lied kept the Spartans perfect in day three doubles competition by defeating Jess and Oathardt of Green Bay 8-4 at three doubles.
The Spartans will continue fall action next weekend (Oct. 21-25) in South Bend, Ind. as they participate in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. MSU will return home Halloween weekend (Oct. 30-Nov. 1) to host the Big Ten Individuals.
